Director Jason Welday ...........Dir. of Eng. Svcs./City Engineer “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” - Charles Darwin Since its earliest days of incorporation, Rancho Cucamonga has been known as the City with a Plan. In the early years, the City planned for rapid residential growth, completion of the 210 freeway, buildout of a large industrial and commercial area, construction of a minor league baseball stadium, and a much anticipated outdoor lifestyle shopping mall. Rancho Cucamonga was originally incorporated because its residents wanted a better plan to adjust to the changing development patterns and the planning of those early days remains a hallmark of the City today. One example of that strong planning is the 2022 General Plan, which incorporated many of the concepts and designs from the original 1980 General Plan. Well-planned residential communities, linked by multi-purpose trails with neighborhood centers that include restaurants, hotels, and retail shopping that provide more things for residents to do and more ways to get there are as important today as it was 40 years ago. The new General Plan also anticipates some of the key things to come in the next 20+ years. What are those changes that we need to prepare for? As the City approaches 200,000 people, public safety is more important than ever. The City, one of the safest in the United States, is working on modernization of its police station along with a new larger substation at Victoria Gardens to join the recently added station on the west side of town. The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District will be opening its 8th station which will provide improved coverage in the core of the City and include a specialized electric fire engine and other equipment to better serve higher-density mixed-use neighborhoods. These public safety enhancements will ensure that the City is prepared to receive the millions of visitors that are expected at Cucamonga Station when Brightline and its high-speed rail line, reach the City. Nearby, the City is investing in Quakes Stadium to prepare it for another 25+ years of Minor League Baseball while adding additional nearby hospitality uses. Finally, the City will soon open Randall Lewis Second Story and Beyond®, a discovery space that will feature unique interactive all-ages learning exhibits focused on different types of literacies. This facility will be the only one of its kind in the region. Rancho Cucamonga is not afraid of change. Rather, we embrace the opportunities that change makes possible. Sincerely, John R. The original motive behind this endeavor was for the City to be able to manage the processes, procedures, and best practices for the welfare of local animals. Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center (RCAC) opened its doors on May 1, 2006, and stands committed to placing the most adoptable animals into FURever homes, utilizing both traditional avenues of personal adoption and collaborative efforts with rescue groups and shelters through transfer programs. While the primary residents of the Animal Center have always been cats and dogs, the RCAC has seen a diverse array of small pets, including rabbits, turtles, hamsters, and guinea pigs, find refuge within its caring walls. The center also intermittently welcomed reptiles for adoption, such as snakes, lizards, and iguanas. Talk about a real ZOO-venir! One of the perks of adopting from the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center is the promise that furry friends are always welcomed back if adopters have a change of heart. This rare commitment to ensuring a PURRfect match distinguishes RCAC, recognizing the complexity of the human-animal bond and acknowledging that ideal matches may not always happen at first sniff. Amidst the TAILS of care and compassion, success stories are abundant, exemplified by the transformation of Apollo, a senior Boxer. Initially distant and uncharacteristically aloof, Apollo’s journey towards well-being began with a comprehensive dental examination that revealed severe gingivitis. Through sedated dental cleaning and attentive care, Apollo’s demeanor shifted to one of wiggly joy, embodying the many characteristics of his breed. A collaborative effort involving a local rescue service resulted in Apollo finding a foster home and, subsequently, a loving permanent family within a week! For those contemplating a new addition to their family, RCAC beckons as a haven for prospective pet parents. Whether seeking a companion or aspiring to contribute through volunteering or donations, the center extends an invitation to explore opportunities, scan the QR code. Your next furry (or non-furry) friend may be awaiting your visit! EmBARK on a tail-wagging historical adventure of the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center! State-of-the-art surgical facility addition in 2012 This PAWsitively exciting addition enabled the performance of common onsite surgeries, such as spaying and neutering, eliminating the logistical challenges associated with outsourcing. The facility’s enhanced capabilities allowed for the employment of a full-time staff veterinarian that can manage a range of surgeries, from routine procedures to specialized interventions for injuries like broken limbs and damaged organs. 11780 Arrow Route Tuesday - Saturday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Lobby Before Lobby After Kennels Before Kennels After PAWS PROGRESS “Bringing our fur-baby Scrappy into our lives remains one of the most heartwarming decisions we’ve ever made. The primary focus of the subcommittee is to destigmatize mental health and build a connection between culturally accessible mental health resources and the community. The electric fire engine supports the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s efforts to be a sustainable community and prioritizes first responders’ health and safety. The electric engine will be housed at Fire Station 178, located on Town Center Dr. east of Haven Ave., scheduled to open in Spring 2024. In the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s 2022 General Plan Update, the topics of mobility, ecology, and urbanization were important when it came to environmental protection and traffic management. The new Rosenbauer RTX will support these efforts by reducing the Fire District’s carbon footprint and noise emissions. The Rosenbauer RTX is the first fire engine to incorporate an all-electric drivetrain that eliminates the engine, transmission, and drivelines typically found in a traditional apparatus. Rather, the Rosenbauer RTX has an electric drivetrain for near-silent operations during non-pumping activities and is supported by an energy backup system that can recharge batteries for extended operations, emergencies, and natural disaster response. In addition to the innovative electric technology, the Rosenbauer RTX will also be the first clean cab in the Fire District’s apparatus fleet, as firefighters’ turnout gear will be stored in the outside compartments of the engine, reducing their exposure to carcinogens in the line of duty. The Rosenbauer RTX also incorporates ergonomic and tactical advantages for less physical strain on fire personnel and greater operational success. The engine can change from a low center of gravity street-based fire engine to an off-road height fire engine with 4-wheel drive capability, allowing for increased, flexible response capabilities for the City’s diverse topography. One of our City Council’s core values is the relentless pursuit of improvement, a value shared by Rosenbauer. They have completely redesigned the fire engine from the ground up, ensuring our first responders have the resources and tools necessary to respond to emergency incidents while also reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental sustainability. – L. Dennis Michael, City of Rancho Cucamonga Mayor embracing the future Our top priority is the health and safety of our community and firefighters. We are proud to incorporate the Rosenbauer RTX into our fleet, as it aligns with our commitment to minimizing the exposure of toxic air contaminants and safeguarding our firefighters from harmful chemicals. – Mike McCliman, City of Rancho Cucamonga Fire Chief GRAPEVINE 21 PLASTIC FREE J uly This initiative empowers millions of individuals to combat plastic pollution, leading to cleaner streets, oceans, and more vibrant communities. Embrace a plastic-free lifestyle by refusing single-use plastics at home, work, school, and local eateries throughout July! TAKE SIMPLE YET IMPACTFUL STEPS, SUCH AS: Use a reusable water bottle Make sure you have a reusable bottle handy at home, work, and in your car, to avoid single-use plastic bottles throughout the day. Avoid single-use plastics at restaurants Skip single-use plastics at fast food places and restaurants. Carry your own travel cutlery set to reduce single-use landfill waste. Utilize reusable bags Bring reusable bags for grocery shopping and other errands. Say no to plastic straws Carry a reusable straw in your bag or store one in your car to avoid plastic straws when ordering drinks. Avoid pre-packed food Prioritize unpackaged fruits and vegetables, when possible, to reduce plastic waste. Choose bar soaps Bar soap often lasts longer than liquid soap and reduces unnecessary plastic packaging. If you’re not quite ready to make the switch to bar soap, purchase bulk options, when available, and refill existing containers. Buy in bulk Purchase dried foods like grains, nuts, and spices in bulk to minimize packaging. Many stores allow you to use your own containers when buying bulk items or sell reusable packaging for dry goods! Join the global movement for #PlasticFreeJuly and become a catalyst for positive change. Together, let’s refuse and reduce plastic to create a sustainable and beautiful community. Join us in making a positive impact on the environment during #PlasticFreeJuly! Warm weather is one reason many appreciate living in Southern California. However, it is also a reminder that we live in an area prone to wildfires. When the weather conditions are just right, the risk of wildfires increases throughout the State. It’s not a matter of IF the next wildfire will occur, but WHEN. The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District encourages you to read further for preparedness tips to help you, your loved ones, and your neighbors be #ReadyRC for wildfire season. • Report suspicious fire-related activity to 1-800-47-ARSON or WeTip.com. Always report actively burning fires by calling 9-1-1. • Always use caution with outdoor open flames and cooking, especially in the high fire hazard areas in the foothill neighborhoods. Barbecues, firepits, candles, lanterns, and Tiki torches are all sources of open flames, which under the right conditions can ignite a fire. Avoid the use of charcoal for cooking and wood for firepits since these can produce embers which are often carried long distances into dry vegetation. • Never discard smoking materials such as cigarettes and cigars on the ground. • Maintain gasoline-powered landscaping equipment so that it does not backfire or overheat. • Create 30 feet of defensible space around your home by clearing dry brush surrounding your property. • Maintain your vehicle to prevent roadside breakdowns that can ignite nearby vegetation. • Create a household evacuation plan and if you are asked to leave, do not hesitate. • Read our ReadyRC Guide for a variety of preparedness information to review with your household and neighbors. This guide can also be downloaded to your mobile device! We are stronger when we work together and the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District appreciates your efforts in ensuring the resiliency of our community. California is no stranger to drought, and water conservation is an important practice for all residents to ensure that we have enough water for everyone for years to come. Landscaping accounts for the vast majority of a household’s water use, especially during the hotter summer months. Here are some outdoor water conservation tips that can help you keep your plants alive and your water bill down this summer: This World Environment Day, consider how extreme heat and drought has made its way into our lives, and practice water conservation as a way to protect this valuable resource during the hot summer months. Install Drip Irrigation A drip irrigation system can significantly reduce water. Drip irrigation allows you to individually water your plants, reducing water waste and overspray caused by watering with a sprinkler system. Adjust Your Watering Schedule This summer, make sure you adjust your watering schedule to between dusk and dawn. Watering while temperatures are low and the sun isn’t at its peak allows more of the water to enter the soil and root systems, reducing the chances of evaporation, a loss of water and money. Use Drought-Tolerant/ Resistant Plants California Friendly® and native plants can naturally withstand drier periods. If you’re thinking about updating your landscaping this year, prioritize plants listed as California natives or drought-tolerant.
