Svcs./City Engineer “Give me books, wine, fruit, fine weather, and a little music played outdoors by someone I don’t know.” - John Keats John Keats was an English poet from the second generation of Romantic poets, including Shelley and Byron. Although his quote on wine is over 200 years old, his sentiment continues to resonate across generations. Rancho Cucamonga is fortunate that our strong roots— encompassing the City’s location, history, and thoughtful planning—have brought us to a place where we can provide such amenities to our residents. Everyone knows about our wonderful climate and the fact that we can enjoy outdoor dining and shopping year-round at Victoria Gardens, the #1 lifestyle mall in the United States. Victoria Gardens continues to expand with new dining options, including Philz Coffee, Bacio di Latte, Seasons 52, and Mendocino Farms, either recently opened or under construction. Building on this, the City recently launched a project to transform the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center Courtyard—previously a large, open concrete area—into a space where live music and other entertainment will be available on weekends almost year- round. Upon completion, the area will feature a permanent outdoor stage, audiovisual equipment, comfortable seating for nearly 1,000 people, shade, and additional landscaping. This transformation will further enhance Victoria Gardens’ appeal to all generations, inviting people to borrow a book from the Paul A. Biane Library, enjoy the weather, and listen to music outdoors, played by someone they don’t know. If a taste of the viticulture experience is what you seek, the City is working on that, too. Rancho Cucamonga has enlisted the expertise of local vintners Gino Filippi and Domenic Galleano to restore and expand the historical grapevines in Central Park. Early in the project, it was discovered that more vines were present than initially believed, and with proper care over the past few years, these vines have begun to thrive. Inspired by this discovery and eager to preserve a piece of the city’s agricultural heritage, the City incorporated a Viticulture Pavilion and adjacent vineyard into the Master Plan. These additions will offer future generations insight into Rancho Cucamonga’s viticulture heritage. The City recently entered into a long-term lease with Galleano Winery to plant additional grapes and expand the vineyard near the planned Viticulture Pavilion. This expansion will serve as a production area, ensuring the continuation of the Cucamonga Valley American Viticultural Area. Books, wine, fine weather, and music played by someone you don’t know—just as appealing in 2025 as it was in the early 1800s. Sincerely, John R.
