Weekly Programs The first performer appeared on Tuesday June 24. Staff had moved most of the furniture out of the children's room but there was still not enough room for the 175 people in attendance. We requested all adults to move to the back and make room for children so that they could enjoy the Rainforest Experience by Pacific Animal Production. Unfortunately there are no photos of this program as no one on the staff had a moment to think of it at the time. A live iguana visits the library Volunteers Teen volunteers are key to the success of the Summer Reading Club and recruitment began in the spdng. There were so many applicants that two meetings were held at the Library to accommodate everyone. Neady 50 teens began the program and - ~I J 35 were consistently involved over the summer. We ~ ~-. are fortunate that many teens return for two or three _~ summers ensuring some experienced and some Singer/Songwriter Dave Kinnoin appeared in July rookie volunteers. Iguana-Palooza :, From the outset we advertised that readers who successfully complete the program would be invited to an Iguana-Palooza event in August· Based on the previous summer party we decided that we had outgrown the carnival style party held in the Library. So we determined to hold an event in the amphitheater at Red Hill Park with performers and some of the favodte events from previous parties. Some parents asked for the date of the party (Fdday August 15) when their children signed up so they would be sure and be available· More than once we heard of families plannir~g vacations so as not to miss it. Talk about pressure! How would we create an off-site event to satisfy the exPectation? Jacquie and Tracy dish up the most popular ¢ item at the party Among the top attractions at previous summer parties were snow cones, temporary tattoos and the fishing booth. Pages Jacquie Cox and Tracy Yniguez staffed the snow cone booth. It was a sticky job but surely popular on a hot day. It was fairly easy to set up under the picnic pavilion where there was a long counter for all the supplies and Storyteller Michael D. McCarty easy access to electricity. The fishing booth was more of a problem. In the · , library Nina had come up with a way to insert decorated cardboard in the doors of the study moms First we looked for tried and true performers, and have the children hang their fishing lines over Michael D. McCarty had wowed a small crowd in the the cardboard. Volunteers inside clipped a prize to story mom for a Black History Month program in each line and tugged on the line. Voila-a happy February 2003· We knew we wanted more people winner. With no study moms in the park we to have a chance to hear him so Michael was borrowed easy-ups from Community Services, booked as the lead-off performer. In 2001 magician wrapped them in fabric and decorated with die cut John Abrams was a huge hit at his summer fish· Duct tape to the rescue when the wind appearance but he is so popular we were unable to threatened the booth. The liked the 5:30 p.m. start time which allowed their husbands to attend, they loved the performers, the spaciousness and parking available at the park. One was a veteran of two parties at the Library and said she hoped we have the party back at Red Hill next year. Staff enthusiastically agrees it will be a great place Grandma Susie Clown arrives; fishing booth for our 2004 Westem Round-Up. in the background Making it's debut at the Amazon Adventure Party was the Library's fabulous new bookmobile. Robert Karatsu and Jason Daly found "Super-Reader" temporary tattoos that went perfectly so we set up the tattoo booth just outside the bookmobile. Jason also had "Super-Reader" bookmarks to give away. Party-goers who brought their library cards could also check out a book that evening. About 150 books were borrowed by party-goers. It doesn't get any better than thisl The new Bookmobile makes it's debut Based on our count and John Abrams estimate, there were approximately 650 people at the Amazon Adventure Party. Staff were especially pleased with the success of the park location and hope to hold next year's "round-up" there, The only drawback is R A N C H O C U C A M O N G A I UI L I C L tI i A Y September 15, 2003 Habeeba Biad 9600 Lomita Court, Apt. 107G Alta Loma, CA 91701 Dear Habeeba Biad, On behalf of the Trustees of the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, congratulations on your appointment to the position of Student Advisory Board for the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library.
