5 SUMMER 2018 GRAPEVINE
Some of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the
Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, and Jojo, a little boy with a big imagination, have lovingly been
brought to life in this Tony Award-winning musical for the entire family! Seussical follows
the adventures of Horton the elephant who discovers a speck of dust the tiny town of
Whoville and its citizens. Not only must Horton protect the Who’s from a world of naysayers
and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible
Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid
Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty,
family, are challenged, but the most miraculous “think” saves them all!

In this charming musical adaptation of the award-winning book by Leo Lionni, all the mice
are busy gathering supplies and getting ready for winter, except for Frederick, who seems to
have his head in the clouds. But when winter comes, it’s Frederick’s collection of memories
about the colors and beauty of nature that sustain his friends through the dark days.

a-Cat month to educate the public about
the wonderful cats and kittens available
for adoption at animal shelters. The ASPCA
wants to "encourage everyone to make pet
adoption their first option and to educate
people about improving their quality of life
through the companionship of a cat."
Our Animal Center has a variety of adorable, fun and cuddly
felines just waiting to find their new forever homes. Visit

Is it too hot to take my dog out today?
We need to ask ourselves this questions
every time we drive with our pet. Warm
weather can literally be a killer for a
dog left inside a vehicle. When it is 85
degrees outside, the temperature inside
a car - even with the windows cracked -
can soar to 102 degrees in 10 minutes and 120 degrees in just half
an hour! Outside temperatures in the 70s can be dangerous too.
Leaving your dog for "just a minute" may be too long.
The RC Animal Care and Adoption Center strongly encourages
pet owners to make an emergency kit for their animals to be
placed alongside their family's disaster "go bag". Here's a list of
recommended items to include:
• Food, water, and medication for at least 5 days
• Health history and veterinary medical records
• Carrier, toys, blanket or bed, and sturdy leashes
• Litter box, litter, scoop, and garbage bags
• ID attached to your pet
• Current photos of all pets with a list of physical descriptions
• Written information about your pets' feeding schedules, medical
conditions and behavior issues along with the name and number
of your veterinarian.
Preventive care is the best care!
Make sure candles are extinguished when you leave a room. Lock
stove knobs to avoid any chance of pets brushing up against knobs,
and always have a fire extinguisher on hand.
Now that we've got you thinking about your
pets' needs during a disaster, does the rest
of your family have a disaster plan in place?
Visit the Fire District's webpage at
www.RCFire.org/ReadyRC for an emergency
kit checklist and guidance on what to do
before, during, and after an emergency. To keep updated on all of our events,

Summer Heat Safety Tip
Unlike people and other animals, rabbits can't
pant to cool themselves. Of course, the best way
to keep a rabbit cool is in your home with the
air conditioning on. Even if you can't keep your
rabbit indoors all the time, consider setting up
an indoor enclosure or putting your rabbit in
your bathroom with a litter box, water and hay
and bring your rabbit in for the hottest part of the day.
