We Take Reservations In many of your neighborhood and community parks there are group picnic shelters which may be reserved. These areas have barbecues, tables, awnings and some have water. Ideal for a family party, a child's birthday, or a group barbecue, most parks are perfect for small groups up to 75. The two big community parks, Heritage and Red Hill, can hold groups up to 300. Reservations should be made as early as possible, but definitely two weeks before the picnic. There are some special rules which apply to the use of the parks and what types of equipment can be used. Please be sure to ask questions, if you are uncertain if a particular activity can be held in the parks. We don't want to discourage spon- taneous use of the picnic areas in the parks, however, please be aware that those picnic tables located under the shade shelters may have been previously reserved. For further information or to make reservations, please call the Athletic Office at, 944-6950. City of Rancho Cucamonga, California CRAMPED FOR SPACE? Rooms are Available in Rancho Cucamonga Planning a party or meeting and don't have the extra space available at your home or business? Space at both of the City's community centers is available for rent. Both Lions Park Community Center and the Rancho Cucamonga Neighborhood Center have many different sized rooms to rent that can accommodate from 25-200 people. Both of the community centers are pleasingly decorated and contain many extra features to make your party or meeting more comfortable. For instance, both centers have kitchens complete with microwave ovens, and access to video cassette recorders and television sets. For additional information concerning building rental fees, policies and avail- ability of rooms contact the community center of your choice. ■ We've Changed . . . As you may be aware, Proposition 73 was successful on the June 7, 1988 ballot. It appears that the intent of this proposi- tion was to prohibit campaign material from being distributed at public expense. Unfortunately, campaign materials has been interpreted as the mass mail distri- bution of city newsletters, including our quarterly newsletter, The Grapevine. This provision took effect immediately with passage of Proposition 73. The City's newsletter, The Grapevine, therefore, has been altered to conform to the initial mass mailing provisions which only allows the distribution of a parks and recreation schedule. It is our understand- ing that the Fair Political Practices Commission, who is responsible for interpreting of this provision, will be meeting shortly to review the intent and scope of this provision. It is anticipated that a favorable interpretation of this provision will be given and that the Winter Issue (November, 1988) of TJie Grapevine will again be produced complete with articles on City activities and a recreation schedule. CITYHOOD A 150 years of local history As a city, Rancho Cucamonga is young having only been incorporated since 1977. But her history dates back to the prehistoric times with the Indians of the Shoshonean stock who lived here. Then came the era of exploration with men like Juan Bautista de Anza, Father Franciso Garces, and Jedediah Smith, who visited this area. Finally, occupation of the land came by a Mexican land grant given to Don Tiburcio Tapia on March 3, 1839. Named "Rancho Cucamonga", the land grant consisted of 13,000 acres, which included today's Upland, parts of Ontario, and the majority of what today is the city of Rancho Cucamonga. On March 3rd, 1989, we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of this land grant and the rich heritage that surrounds our community.
