Donations Everyone likes a soft, comfy place to rest and relax, even our homeless pets at the RCAC &AC,so all our pets get a blanket, towel,or bed in their cages. With over 5,000 pets being cared for at the Center every year,we go through a lot of towels and blankets. We are currently running low so we are asking all our RC pet lovers to see if there are any soft items that you are no longer using at home. These items can be dropped off at the Center to make our homeless pets’stay a bit more comfortable. We can also use donations of food, crates, leashes, kitten milk replacement and toys. We greatly appreciate any of these items. We at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center want to make a difference in the lives of homeless and abused pets. But we can only do that with the generous support of our community. Holiday Health Tips We’re all for keeping holiday spirits high with fancy decor and bow-topped presents, but the best gift for your pets this season is to steer them clear of unhealthy foods, toxic holiday plants and dangerous decorations. The following tips will help keep everyone -furry and two-legged -in good cheer: •Tinsel-less Town:Kitties love this sparkly,light-catching “toy”that ’s easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But if swallowed it can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. •Toy Joy:Stuff your pet ’s stockings with gifts that are safe. Many a dog has torn toys apart and swallowed the pieces, which can become lodged in the esophagus, stomach or intestines.Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, digestible chew treats or Kongs that can be stuffed with healthy foods. •Ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in a cat ’s intestines which often requires surgery.Surprise a kitty with a new ball that ’s too big to swallow or a stuffed catnip toy. •Forget the Mistletoe &Holly:When ingested by pets, Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems.Holly can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats.Opt for artificial plants made from silk or plastic,or choose a pet-safe bouquet. Winterizing Your Pet Don't leave dogs outdoors when the temperature drops. Most dogs, and all cats, are safer indoors, except when taken out for exercise.Regardless of the season, short haired, very young, or old dogs and all cats should never be left outside without supervision. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors.Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy.use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal;when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal. Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, which may crawl up under the hood.To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood to scare them away before starting your engine. Rabbits do not tolerate drafts or dampness.Rabbits make wonderful house pets, but if you keep your bunny outside make sure to bring her inside if the weather falls below 40 degrees F. Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that may attract animals and children.Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and all household chemicals)out of reach.
