June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)is celebrating June as Adopt A Shelter Cat Month to educate people about the wonderful cats and kittens available for adoption at shelters. They want to “encourage all Americans to make pet adoption their first option and to educate people about improving their quality of life through the companionship of a cat.” Our Animal Center has a variety of adorable, fun,and cuddly felines just waiting to find their new companion.Come for a visit today and see which new four legged friend will melt your heart. Traveling with Your Pet If you plan to travel with your pet this summer, preparation is the key to a happy vacation.Traveling with pets can be highly stressful for both you and your pets. Here are some helpful tips to make the journey more enjoyable. •Visit your veterinarian to make sure your pet is current on vaccinations. •Bring proof of current vaccinations if traveling across state lines. •Make sure your pet has a microchip for identification and is wearing a collar and ID tag. •For safe air travel, make sure your pet’s collar includes destination information in case your pet escapes.Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for your pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably.Write the words “Live Animal”in letters at least one inch tall on top of and at least one side of the crate. •Bring plenty of plastic jugs filled with water from home.Drinking water the pet is not used to could upset his/her stomach. •Bring favorite toys as well as favorite food and dishes. •Make plenty of rest stops (every 2 hours)so you and your pet can stretch your legs and go to the bathroom. •If your pet has not traveled by car before, take it for several short rides before your trip. •Stick to your regular feeding schedule. •Never leave your pet in a parked automobile. •If staying with friends along the way,be considerate or research to find pet friendly hotels or other accommodations prior to leaving. Following these suggestions will help make traveling with your pet a much happier experience for everyone. Donation Station Help make a difference in the lives of homeless and abused animals by donating food, crates, blankets, towels, leashes, kitten milk replacement (KMR), toys, etc.for animals in need. Contributions of these items are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center. Help us realize our mission by volunteering at the Center, fostering young kittens and puppies, attending fundraising events and donating items from our Wish List (visit www.rcpets.info for a copy of the list). Please call (909)466-7387 ext.2075 for further information. Farrah Crowned Pit Idol 2010 With 350 votes cast, the Rancho Cucamonga Pit Idol Contest concluded on March 1st.This unique competition was created to find the most charming Pit Bull from ten specially chosen contestants.Happily, four were adopted during the competition! Farrah won by a huge majority with 125 votes,Cece came in second with 75 and there was a tie between Monroe and Smokey with 25 votes. Thanks to the generosity of Trainer Cindy Scott, all of the six remaining contestants will receive a basic obedience course from Dogs etc.The winner,Farrah, will go on to further training for a Canine Good Citizen certificate from the AKC.Farrah was adopted by a couple who both require the assistance of walking aids. She will become a service dog, helping with their mobility issues as well as opening doors and retrieving dropped items and the phone if either person falls and cannot get up. Three lucky winners who voted for the winning dogs were chosen in a drawing for a $500 first prize,a second prize of a flat screen TV and an IPOD Nano for third. The contest received a great deal of publicity and was carried on two well known national websites. The first prize donation came from a generous Pit Bull owner in Minnesota. We hope that the contest and our wonderful contestants were able to bring perspective to this misunderstood breed and show a side of Pit Bulls that is often overlooked.Thank you to all who participated.
