Rancho CucamongaAnimalCarean d A d o p t i o n C e n t e r It's Summer in the City…Here Are Ways to Help Your Pet Chill Out Seasonably hot weather can mean problems for pets.Animals are prone to heat-related conditions, just like people, and hot, sunny days can bring about dehydration and overheating. Here are important ways to help pets enjoy this fun time of the year: •Never leave your pet in a car alone, even if it’s only for a few minutes or in a shaded spot with the windows down. •Early signs of heat distress are drooling, panting heavily and labored breathing. If you notice these symptoms bring your pet into a cool environment such as an air-conditioned room, provide cool water and ice and contact your veterinarian. If your pet becomes unresponsive and/or unconscious, rush the animal to a veterinarian without delay. In transit, cool your pet slowly with a wet towel and ice. •Snub-nosed breeds such as Bulldogs,Pugs,Boston Terriers, Lhasa Apsos,Shih Tzus and older pets with heart or lung diseases, are especially prone to heat-related problems. Let them rest inside as much as possible during the summer. •Do not let your dog ride in the back of an open vehicle, such as a pickup truck. •Playtime is healthiest for your pet when it is in the evening or early morning. •When outside, pets should always have shade and fresh water.Bring pets into the house at the hottest time of the day. •Keep your pet well-groomed,but resist the temptation to shave off all of his hair in an effort to keep him cool as this will increase the chance of sunburn. Rabbits require additional precautions to stay cool in the heat: •Never keep rabbits in direct sun.Sixty-seven degrees Fahrenheit is best for rabbits; heat in the upper 80’s and beyond can lead to fatal heat stroke. •Freeze plastic soda bottles 3/4 full with clean water and place each bottle in the rabbit's home for extra cooling (rotate throughout the day). www.rcpets.info… is the pet resource of choice for Rancho Cucamonga residents.View personal profiles and pictures of loveable, adoptable animals.Visit us online and you’ll want to adopt a new member of the family.
