AWARDS FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE
The Planning Commission will tour all nominees on May 11, starting at 1:00
p.m., prior to the regular Planning Commission meeting. Please meet by the
fountain or in the City Planner's office. A van will be provided by the
Redevelopment Agency for the tour. Attached is a map and list of all
nominations.
AWARDS CRITERIA: The purpose of the Awards for Design Excellence Program is
to publicly recognize those projects which meet the following criteria:
* Does the project demonstrate excellence in design?
* Does the project demonstrate innovative and resourceful use of land?
* Does the project implement the goals and policies of the City?
* Is the project an "outstanding" example worth of emulation?
Staff believes that an award winner should demonstrate mastery of the City's
design standards and policies and achieve results which are well beyond the
level expected of the great majority of projects. The standard of design
quality is high in the City of Rancho Cucamonga; therefore, the number of
projects which greatly exceed the "normal" expectations should be quite
limited.
While the jury may use the published design policies of the City (see
attached), the reasons for granting an award can vary from project to
project: one project may be outstanding for its pedestrian friendly features,
another for its skillful architectural design, yet another for successfully
integrating several different land uses. For example, in previous years, the
Co~ission has bestowed awards for master planning, landscaping, and public
art elements.
The tour of completed projects is also valuable as a opportunity for
Co~issioners to share their thoughts with each other regarding the process,
the results and potential changes needed in policy, practice or standard.
