25TH ANNIVERSARY World Spay Day February 26
It's the Right Choice: For You, Your Pet and Rancho Cucamonga
World Spay Day is an annual campaign of The HSUS, Humane Society
International and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Associations.
The campaign shines a spotlight on the power of affordable, accessible
spay/neuter services to save the lives of companion animals, community
(feral and stray) cats and dogs. Take action on February 26 and promote the
many benefits of spaying an neutering pets!
Spaying and neutering is good for your pet, you, and the community.
• Dogs and cats will be healthier and live a longer, happier life.
• Your dog or cat will be a better, more affectionate companion.
• Your pet will be better behaved, friendlier and less likely to fight,
bite, or run away.
• Your neutered cat is less likely to spray and mark territory.
A walk provides not only a workout,
but also the chance to work on your
dog's leash training. A canine who
has expended energy by exercising is
more apt to focus on the lesson.
Here are some tips for walking your dog:
A hike will help him tap into his instinct
to explore!
Taking a turn with your barking buddy,
whether it's around the block or your neighborhood park,
will transform them into a social butterfly!
Meeting other people, children and fellow dogs will help any
canine tackle shyness and fear.
If your fur family consists of more than one dog, taking them
on treks together will help your pooches bond as a pack.
Even short hikes can lengthen and improve your dog's quality
of life, as well as your own!
Exposure to traffic noises can help your canine companion
become comfortable with his surroundings.
Donations
We greatly appreciate the efforts of those who have
been collecting donations of crates, blankets, towels,
comforters, leashes, toys and other items for our
homeless animals. Donated items can be dropped off
at our Center during normal business hours.
We strive to make a difference in the lives of homeless
animals and we can only do that because of the
generous contributions from our commUNITY.
Thank you for choosing to make a difference!
• Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip
and fall, causing possible injury to your pet.
• Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can
cause pets to suffer nausea, vomitting, and diarrhea.
• Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching
"toy" that's easy to bat around and carry in their months.
If swalllowed, it can lead to an obstructed digestive tract,
severe vomitting, dehydration and possible surgery.
• Holiday Glow: Don't leave lighted candles unattended.
Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they
knock candles over.
• Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic
ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver
a potentially lethal electric shock.

Volume 14, Issue 4 Winter 2019
Over the course of this year, the City
has been working with the community
to determine whether and how to
proceed with the possible annexation
of the 4,288 acres that makes
up the majority of the remaining
unincorporated lands of the Etiwanda
area. Through community workshops
and surveys conducted in the spring
of 2018, a clear community consensus
emerged that the City should take
over control of the future of this
area, now under County jurisdiction,
and that new taxes on residents to
acquire it as open space were not
acceptable. Based on that community
feedback, the City Council directed that
limited neighborhood development was the
most practical way to enable local control
without imposing new open space taxes on
existing residents, and requested City staff
to continue to work with the community
and prepare a plan concept that prioritized
open space retention balanced with enough
neighborhood development to cover the
open space costs.
This past summer, the City conducted a
series of pop-up events, community interviews
and an online survey to better understand the
community’s vision for a neighborhood and
open space conservation plan, which is now
called the Etiwanda Heights Neighborhood
and Conservation Plan. Three initial
conceptual plan alternatives were developed
and presented to the community. Based on
feedback received through those engagement
opportunities, a refined concept plan was
revealed at a community open
house on September 21st at the
Victoria Gardens Cultural Center.
The refined concept proposed
for 83% of the 4,288 acre plan
area to be kept rural, and
17% to be made available for
neighborhoods. The rural area
would be a mix of existing and new
habitat conservation, very limited
low intensity rural residential
similar to what is already present
there, continuing flood control
operations to protect the City from
flood hazards, and a trail system
for controlled recreational and
educational access. The neighborhood areas
would include a range of single-family housing
types from very large to small, a network of
neighborhood streets and parks for walking,
biking and play, and a few small centers with
neighborhood-serving amenities such as a
school, library, small shops and restaurants,
and play fields. Trail connections from existing
and future neighborhoods into the foothills to
the north will be a major priority.

Since incorporation in 1977, Rancho Cucamonga has
experienced several economic transformations. Early
on, the City’s primary industry was agricultural and
was known for its citrus and vineyards. This industry
began to fade from 1940-70 due to several adverse
weather events that severely impacted crops. Rapid
growth in the surrounding areas led to developers
eagerly eyeing, and buying, the comparatively
inexpensive land in the unincorporated community for
easy development under County standards. The City
ultimately incorporated in the late 1970s and one of
the first things it did was work on an early General Plan
to guide growth for years to come.
Between 1990 and 2005 the City experienced
significant expansion in logistics due, in large part,
to local freeway corridors and proximity to the
Port of Long Beach. The distance between Rancho
Cucamonga and the port is the same distance a fully
loaded tractor and trailer could go in one day without
refilling. Low land values also helped fuel growth in
warehouse developments.
Similarly, the early 2000’s saw significant growth in the
City’s retail sector. Terra Vista was built out and many
major tenants established it as a location to serve the
growing community. Victoria Gardens was developed
and opened in 2006. The City worked, unsuccessfully,
with many developers over the years in an attempt
to find one that shared the vision of an outdoor,
downtown lifestyle center. That vision ultimately came
to fruition with Forest City. In less than 5 years Victoria
Gardens became a huge success, known nationwide,
and the heart of Rancho Cucamonga’s economic
engine. As we sit here today, Rancho Cucamonga is
one of the Inland Empire’s premier cities, featuring a
skilled workforce, strong manufacturing sector, diverse
and vibrant retail and an array of quality housing.
Rancho Cucamonga prides itself on innovation and
our motto is “A World Class Community.” The City
continues that commitment with initiatives like Healthy
RC to emphasize community health and prosperity.
The Rancho Cucamonga Municipal Utility (RCMU), the
City’s award winning municipal utility, will soon offer,
along with our private sector partner, high-bandwidth
Internet service to businesses and residents to ensure
the City retains a competitive edge in the information-
based digital economy. Together, RCMU and the
new fiber optic network will continue to foster an
environment that is attractive to new businesses and
families for decades to come. Healthy RC, and the
partnerships that are being formed with our award-
winning local school districts, ensure that tomorrow’s
families have an environment that is safe and healthy,
both mentally and physically, as well as good for the
Earth and our natural resources. We will also remain a
place, where people of all income levels, race, religion,
and national origin come together to find a walkable,
healthy, safe and educational environment to raise a
family.

RC Celebrates International Walk to School Day!
Pounding the pavement on the way to a healthier future.
Hundreds of community members walked,
biked, and celebrated health and safety on
Wednesday, October 10th with the Healthy
RC Safe Routes to School Program for
International Walk to School Day.
Healthy RC partnered with Los Amigos
Elementary School this year to encourage
students and their families to lace up their
sneakers to walk, bike, or roll to school
rather than drive. Local elected officials
joined teachers and parents, school
administrators, City staff, and public safety
personnel. They led “walking school buses” from designated meeting locations to the
school, simulating children walking in the same arrangement as though they were riding
on a school bus.
The Healthy RC Safe Routes to School Program is a comprehensive approach to bicycle
and pedestrian safety to enable and encourage all children to walk and bike to school.
Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling. The program
emphasizes the importance of physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic
congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families,
schools, and the broader community.
If you are interested in joining an existing program, creating a new program at your
school, or would like more information, visit HealthyRC.com.

The open house was an opportunity to present
and receive comments on a conceptual plan
for the Etiwanda Heights area at the northeast
corner of the City. A series of “stations” were
set up in the courtyard of the cultural center,
walking participants through the history of
this plan, the alternatives considered over last
summer, community responses received, and
refined plan concepts assembled by City staff
and design team to reflect the community’s
expressed preferences and priorities. During
the open house, and in the days following it, the City received additional input from
the community on how the neighborhood plan could be further refined to better meet
the vision of the community. The City has taken this input and incorporated it into the
planning process to work towards producing a long-term, community-based plan for
limited neighborhoods and extensive open space for the 4,288 acre plan area.
Over the next several months, the City will be conducting extensive environmental
and economic analysis to better understand the feasibility of a plan for new
neighborhoods and open space conservation. One of the critical processes that will
start soon is environmental analysis under the California Environmental Quality Act.
Before a plan goes before the Planning Commission or City Council, the City will
prepare an Environmental Impact Report to identify potential environmental impacts
and recommendations for alleviating those impacts. This document will also serve to
provide the public and decision makers with a better understanding of the potential
issues of new development under the plan.
There are still many steps before the City Council will evaluate this plan in 2019. The
community’s input has been a foundational component of the plan’s development.
As the plan and associated analysis moves forward, we hope the members of the
community will continue to stay involved and help craft the vision for the Etiwanda
Heights neighborhoods and open space areas. For more information on the community
input received and to stay updated on this effort, visit CityofRC.us/EtiwandaHeights.

Gerdau Long Steel North America Joins Green Business Recognition Program
Steel giant recognized for green products and practices.
Gerdau Long Steel North America, recently acquired by Commercial
Metals Company (CDC), is now part of the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s
Green Business Recognition Program. Gerdau is the first industrial
company to be recognized as a Rancho Cucamonga Green Business.
It is one of the largest recyclers in the world, transforming 16 million
metric tons of scrap into steel every year.
Gerdau’s Rancho Cucamonga mill manufactures, fabricates, and installs
rebar at construction sites. It is the last melting steel facility in California and supplies over one-
third of overall rebar demand. They boast one of the cleanest mills in the world with the lowest
particulate and metals emissions rates in the United States. Upgrading its Bag House was a
multi-year, multi-million dollar investment representing an impressive commitment to the safe
and sustainable production of “Green Steel.” They have also incorporated a variety of green
practices into their operations to promote waste reduction, sustainable purchasing, pollution
prevention, energy efficiency, and alternative transportation.
The steel from Gerdau qualifies for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
credits from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is the most widely used green building rating
system in the world and provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving
green buildings. The economic contributions of Gerdau are significant as they currently employ
approximately 1,100 jobs in California, 561 in San Bernardino County, 300 of which are at the
Rancho Cucamonga mill. It also received the 2018 Achievement in Environmental Stewardship
Award from the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA).
The Green Business Recognition Program showcases the sustainability efforts of Rancho
Cucamonga businesses and encourages green business practices throughout the community.
Businesses that demonstrate environmental practices in various categories and complete no-
cost resource assessments are eligible for recognition. The Green Business Recognition Program
is part of the City’s Healthy RC Program and promotes environmentally sustainable practices
in the community. For more information about the Green Business Program, contact Deborah
Allen at (909) 774-2047 or Deborah.Allen@CityofRC.us.

End the Holidays on a Green Note
Did you know approximately 80% of your
holiday waste is recyclable? All you need to do
is include gift boxes, wrapping paper, greeting
cards, and cardboard packaging in your recycling
bin. Burrtec Waste Industries will collect your
excess holiday trash and recyclables beginning
December 26, 2018, through January 11, 2019.
Place excess holiday trash and recyclables in
bags alongside your containers on your regular
collection day.
You can also recycle your Christmas tree with Burrtec. Be sure you remove all ornaments, lights,
and metal stands. Trees over six feet need to be cut in half. Simply place your tree at the curb
from December 26, 2018 through January 11, 2019, on your regular collection day.
Green Bike Lanes
Bike safety gets a green light in
the green lane.
Say hello to safer and more visible bike
lanes! The City of Rancho Cucamonga is
implementing bright green bike lanes to
help promote biking as a transportation
method and enhance safety for bicyclists
and motorists. Thanks to the Mobile Source
Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee
grant, this enhancement project highlights
bikes lanes with green thermoplastic in areas
where vehicles and bicycles may meet, such
as approaching intersections and right turn
pockets. Green bike lanes allow bicyclists to
feel safer when approaching a conflict area,
where weaving typically occurs, while also
increasing awareness of bicyclists to other
motorists.
Initial improvements were made at
the intersection of Base Line Road and
Carnelian Street and these improvements
are now expanding along Base Line Road,
Haven Avenue, Jersey Boulevard, and 6th
Street. The project represents a visible City
commitment to active transportation and
Healthy RC. Remember to share the road and
keep an eye out in the Green Zone!
Caring is Always in Season
The Compassionate Community
initiative was launched by the
City of Rancho Cucamonga and
Healthy RC in 2017 and has
continued to inspire residents
to make a difference in our
community. Whether a project is big or small, the effort of
sharing compassion and promoting acts of kindness will
ultimately lead to a more healthy, sustainable and resilient
community.
Acting on Compassion
Starting the school year with the necessary school supplies
promotes learning, boosts self-esteem and helps keep
students in school. Having school supplies is vital to a child’s
educational success, yet thousands of children arrive to our
local classrooms each day without the necessary tools for
learning.
The City of Rancho Cucamonga partnered with Healthy
RC’s Compassionate Communities subcommittee and
community partners to assist Bear Gulch Elementary School
in collecting the necessary school supplies for our students,
in this year’s back-to-school supplies drive held from July
to August. This School Supplies Drive helps ensure that all
students have the same opportunity to start the school year
right.
In total, the City and community partners collected and
distributed over 3,200 school supplies to local elementary
school students at Bear Gulch. Lily Knapp, a second-grade
student, expressed her gratitude saying “Thank you! These
school supplies are working good and I like them.” We are
excited to have come together as a community to provide
these students a great kick-off to learning.
The City of Rancho Cucamonga and the Compassionate
Communities subcommittee would like to thank everyone
who participated in this compassionate act. We encourage
everyone to act on compassion and spread kindness in your
own communities!

Mental Health
Strategies Earn
State Award
for Making a
Difference
Start the conversation. Break the stigma!
Healthy RC’s mental health strategies were recently honored with a statewide
award for innovation in improving quality of life. Rancho Cucamonga was one of
twelve California cities to receive a Helen Putnam Award for Excellence by the
League of California Cities. The City won in the category of Health and Wellness
for demonstrating collaboration through cross-sector partners to carry out programs
that make an impact in health and wellness.
Mental health is a community health priority that affects one in four individuals
in the country. The City is taking a comprehensive approach regarding prevention
and treatment of mental health issues by tackling their root causes. Some strategies
include destimagtizing mental health through community conversations and the Your
Mind Matters mental health campaign.
The Mental Health Subcommittee executes strategies, like the digital and
print campaign for Your Mind Matters, to meet the needs of our community. The
Subcommittee also creates quarterly Mental Health Symposiums, which serve
as a safe space for residents to have conversations about topics such as anxiety,
depression, suicide prevention, and bullying with mental health professionals and
organizations. Residents learn they are not alone in their struggles and that finding
access to culturally appropriate services is only a phone call away. Residents are
encouraged to visit HealthyRC.com for more information.
Keep Homes Healthy and Safe
Keep your home healthy and safe by properly disposing of household toxics
such as cooking oil, leftover household cleaners, paint, motor oil and electronics
at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility.
The collection facility is open Saturdays only from 8:00 a.m. to noon at 8794 Lion
Street off 9th Street between Vineyard Avenue and Hellman Avenue.
The HHW collection facility will be closed on November 24, December 22, and
December 29, 2018.
It is illegal to abandon hazardous substances outside the facility when it is closed.
Call (800) OILYCAT (800-645-9228) or visit tootoxictotrash.com for days and hours
of operations.
The facility only accepts waste from residents of Rancho Cucamonga or San
Bernardino County. Limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per trip in containers
no larger than 5 gallons. Business waste is not accepted. Call the Environmental
Programs Info Line at (909) 919-2635 for a complete list of acceptable items.
Food Too Good to Waste
Planning, prepping, and storing can
help waste less food.
The excess food that we trash on a daily basis
could be making a difference in our community.
Food waste is generated by things like uneaten
leftovers and spoiled produce, and about 94
percent of that ends up in landfills. In 2015, 37.6
million tons of food waste was disposed of in the
United States. By managing food sustainably
and reducing waste, we can help businesses
and consumers save money, provide a bridge
in our communities for those who do not have
enough to eat, and conserve resources for future
generations.
Planning, prepping, and storing food can help
your household waste less food. Below are some
tips to help you do just that:
• Make a list with weekly meals in mind to
save money and time and eat healthier food.
• Keep a running list of meals and ingredients
that your household already enjoys so you
can easily choose, shop for and prepare
meals.
• Make your shopping list based on how many
meals you’ll eat at home.
• Plan your meals for the week before you go
shopping and buy only the things needed
for those meals. You will be more likely to
keep it fresh and use it all.
• Include quantities on your shopping list
noting how many meals you’ll make with
each item to avoid overbuying. For example:
salad greens - enough for two lunches.
• Check your refrigerator and cupboards first
to avoid buying food you already have.
Make a list each week of what needs to be
used and plan meals around those items
first.
• Only buy in bulk if you are able to use the
food before it spoils.
Remember, in Rancho Cucamonga, food waste
from households goes in the trash cart and to the
landfill. Let’s feed people, not landfills.

CommUNITY Paint Day
Creating Unity in our Community one paint stroke at a time.
The City of Rancho Cucamonga and some
dedicated community members transformed
an ordinary intersection near Los Amigos
Elementary School at Baker Avenue and
9th Street into a vibrant public space. This
CommUNITY Paint Day, held on September
29, 2018, was the culmination of direct
collaboration with Los Amigos Elementary
School, neighborhood residents, community
partners, local graphic artists and City staff.
The project was funded in part by a grant from
Southern California Association of Governments
and was created entirely by this community.
Healthy RC hosted community meetings in the
Los Amigos Elementary School neighborhood to
provide residents and students the opportunity
to voice their vision for the mural design. Janet
Temkin, Superintendent of Cucamonga School
District, reflected on the City’s collaboration with
the school and said, “From the very beginning,
our students were allowed the opportunity to
participate in the engagement process to share
their hopes, dreams and values in depicting a
design for this project.” Chaffey College art
student and resident, Vincent Jimenez, helped bring the community’s vision of unity and
diversity to life.
In addition to giving neighborhood residents, students, teachers and community members
the opportunity to paint the mural onto the intersection, individuals also enjoyed the many
festivities offered at the CommUNITY Paint Day. Musical entertainment was provided by two
local artists: Red Grammer and an 11-year-old alumnus of Los Amigos Elementary School,
DJ Thunder. Kids from the community also enjoyed face painting, a bike rodeo to promote
bicycle and pedestrian safety, and a cooking demonstration by Chef Geno to promote healthy
eating. The CommUNITY Paint Day event attracted over 300 participants and helped forge
strong ties among community members. Superintendent Temkin further commented on the
positive impact this project will have on students and said, “Students have learned that their
voice is important, can be heard and that they can be a part of something greater in their
community by working together.” Healthy RC would like to thank everyone who were a part
of this first ever CommUNITY Paint Day!

Cell Phone Alerts Prompt Quick Action in Emergencies
Your cell phone’s lifeline capabilities extend beyond dialing 9-1-1.
Advances in technology now enable your cell phone
to receive alerts in emergency situations. In June, the
Fire District introduced the PulsePoint lifesaving mobile
app in partnership with our local dispatch agency,
CONFIRE. The PulsePoint mobile app alerts CPR-trained
citizens to someone nearby in sudden cardiac arrest.
The app features complete 9-1-1 system integration
and is available in Rancho Cucamonga and most of San
Bernardino County. It helps cardiac arrest victims get
immediate care from nearby qualified residents while
Paramedics are en route. Bystanders can also find a
nearby Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through
its companion app, PulsePoint AED.
Having trained individuals notified and capable of
rendering aid means more cardiac arrest victims will have
a better chance of survival. The Rancho Cucamonga
Fire District encourages everyone to download the free
PulsePoint app and learn CPR. You never know when
you might be in the right place at the right time to help
someone.
In addition to the life-saving CPR/AED functionality, the
app shares real-time updates on Fire District responses
such as structure fires, traffic collisions and rescues.
PulsePoint will not share calls for medical assistance, whether at a public place or private
residence, to protect one’s privacy.
Emergency alerts pushed directly to your cell phone can also provide you with timely
warnings that may require you to take action, especially if you are in an area with imminent
danger. An estimated 95 percent of Americans own cell phones, yet less than 50 percent
of households have a landline, according to the Centers for Disease Control. So how can
you ensure you are alerted in emergency situations in enough time to react and evacuate
safely if needed? San Bernardino County law enforcement and fire departments use the
Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS) to send high-speed mass notifications
via telephone and text messages. The notifications are sent to areas in eminent danger
where critical information must be communicated for public safety, such as the need for
evacuation. Landline phones are automatically added to the database, but residents must
sign-up to receive notifications via text message or Voice Over Internet phone numbers
(VOIP). The Fire District encourages you to sign up today at https://bit.ly/2NkQfcc.
Parks Make Life Better!
Park Rangers and Park Monitors help
make Rancho Cucamonga parks better!
Whether you visit a Rancho Cucamonga park or
trail, you will probably notice staff assigned to keep
your experience fun, safe, and enjoyable. Park
Rangers and Park Monitors patrol City parks and
facilities, the Pacific Electric Trail, and the entrance
to Cucamonga Canyon and Etiwanda Preserve.
Rangers work closely with the San Bernardino
County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) and City
of Rancho Cucamonga Public Works staff to
protect and preserve the parks and open spaces.
The Rangers also educate and enforce our park
rules to ensure visitors use the parks and facilities
appropriately and have an enjoyable experience.
Their duties also include responding to dispatch
calls regarding user conflicts, parking issues, and
follow-up on specific target areas.
The City’s Community Services Department
began working on this program back in 2013. A
multi-department team identified issues on trails,
and in parks and open spaces. Community Services
staff worked with the SBCSD Rancho Cucamonga
station, Rancho Cucamonga Fire District, City
of Rancho Cucamonga GIS staff, Animal Care
Services, and Public Works to prepare the program
and establish comprehensive training. The Park
Rangers were introduced to the City in 2015 and
can be identified through their uniforms, vehicles
and bicycles.
Park Monitors patrol, maintain the appearance of
parks, and assist with shelter and field rentals. The
Monitors are a huge asset and often first to report
suspicious activity to the Park Rangers.
With the assistance of the Rangers and Monitors,
the City continues to work toward making our parks,
trails and open spaces a fun and safe environment
for all of our visitors. Make sure to keep an eye out
for our team and say hello when you get a chance.
If you need assistance they are there to help!

Empowering Our Kids Through the BRAVE Initiative
Rancho Cucamonga kids are learning to BE BRAVE!
What does being brave mean to you?
Sometimes bravery extends beyond
the dictionary definition of being ready
to face danger and show courage, and
into learning to protecting your own
safety.
In July 2002, the life of Samantha
Runnion, a five-year-old little girl from
Orange County, came to a tragic end.
While outside playing with her friend,
Samantha was taken by a stranger
and her body found the next day. Her
mother, Erin Runnion, through The
Joyful Child Foundation in Memory of
Samantha Runnion, created the BRAVE
Initiative to protect and empower
children. The program certifies men and
women throughout Southern California
to teach children about safety and self-
defense.
The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is fortunate to have three certified BRAVE Instructors
in the Crime Prevention Unit. These dedicated Sheriff’s Service Specialists conducted a three day
BRAVE Workshop in June for parents and children in our community. They learned about predatory
behaviors, child abduction and molestation statistics, including the 58,000 children who are
abducted by friends, acquaintances, and care givers. The program also teaches children verbal
and physical skills. They practice yelling loudly, running and telling. They also learned how to
use different physical defense techniques. The children practiced their newly acquired skills and
the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department rewarded them with a certificate of completion that
included their thumbprint.
On September 29, 2018, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department-Rancho Cucamonga
Station received an award from The Joyful Child Foundation for Community Partner of the Year.
This award is given to the organization that demonstrates dedication and passion for children’s
safety. We extend a special thank you to Erin Runnion and The Joyful Child Foundation in Memory
of Samantha Runnion for sharing this great program. Abuse only thrives in silence and we must
continue to empower and educate our families. BE BRAVE!
If you would like more information on upcoming BRAVE Workshops or other events, please call
the Crime Prevention Unit at (909) 774-2686, or follow the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department
on social media.

Broadway at the Gardens Presents The Hunchback of Notre Dame
February 15th – 24th at Lewis Family Playhouse
Broadway at the Gardens is taking on the
challenge of famed Disney song-writer Alan
Menken’s powerfully sweeping score of The
Hunchback of Notre Dame. With a cast of 40,
including a haunting choir, Victor Hugo’s gothic
novel comes to life on stage in February 2019.
The show centers around tension between the
mysterious bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral,
Quasimodo, his stern-hearted caretaker, Frollo,
and the beautiful, yet outcast Gypsy, Esméralda.
The production includes songs from the
Academy Award-nominated Disney animated
feature as well as new songs by Alan Menken
and Stephan Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book
embraces story theatre techniques as well as
features verbatim passages from Hugo’s original
work. Director, Marla Gam-Hudson, is making
her Lewis Family Playhouse debut and describes
her vision of the production as “not the safe Disney version.” She says the music is similar, but
the plot follows closely to the classic Victor Hugo novel and the production will be “an interactive
environmental piece of theater… that will be fresh and new and will bring color and wonder to the
audiences.”
This is definitely a production to add to your calendar so be sure to purchase your tickets before
they sell out! The Hunchback of Notre Dame runs from February 15th – 24th with performances
on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at the Lewis Family Playhouse,
12505 Cultural Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91739. Tickets can be purchased at
lewisfamilyplayhouse.com, via our mobile app LF Playhouse (available in the App & Google Play
store) or through the Box Office at (909) 477-2752. Audition information will be made available
soon at lewisfamilyplayhouse.com/broadway/auditions.php.
