“When You Come to a
Fork in the Road, take it.”
- Yogi Berra
Many of you have seen, read, or heard about the possibility
of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes leaving for Ontario. For
whatever reason, perhaps misunderstanding or accidental
misinformation, the local media have lately contained
headlines and provocative statements that have confused many people about
just what is happening.
In reality, devoid of headlines and misleading statements, the City of Rancho
Cucamonga is at a fork in the road. Major League Baseball (MLB) has enacted new
stadium improvement and operating standards that all teams, new or existing,
and the stadiums they play in, must comply with. Further, MLB is expanding in the
growing area of the Inland Empire and adding another team. There are several
teams in California whose minor league stadiums are not compliant with MLB
requirements and do not have a path forward to make the improvements required.
Rancho Cucamonga chose one fork already and has begun the necessary phases
of improvements and Ontario is looking to build a new, and compliant, stadium.
Rancho Baseball LLC, the owner of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, is looking to
acquire another team so it would own two teams, one in Ontario and one in Rancho
Cucamonga. Most likely one of these other existing teams in California who needs
an MLB compliant stadium, may relocate to the Inland Empire and join the Quakes,
66ers, and Storm in calling this area home. But the names the Quakes, Epicenter,
Tremor and Aftershock, etc. are a package that contractually belong to Rancho
Cucamonga. So, the Quakes are not leaving Rancho Cucamonga, and Ontario’s
team, when it gets one, will have a different name.
In fact, the City is not only improving the Epicenter but also the surrounding area.
We are completing an Epicenter Master Plan that will bring additional restaurants,
entertainment, parking and possibly some residential to the Epicenter area while
providing for new pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. Those improvements will join
the new scoreboard, and soon lights, field, locker rooms and weight room as the
Epicenter prepares to host the Quakes for another 20+ years. Our vision is for the
Epicenter to become an entertainment hub year-round, hosting not only baseball
games but concerts, special events and community activities for all to enjoy.
Meanwhile, we wish our neighbor to the south well as they begin the journey
to hosting their own minor league team, just as Rancho Cucamonga did over
30 years ago.
Sincerely,
John R. Gillison, City Manager

The Lewis Family Playhouse (LFP), located
at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center,
is a thriving hub of entertainment. With its
dedication to the performing arts and wide array
of performances, the Lewis Family Playhouse
has become an integral part of the City’s cultural
landscape.
The Lewis Family Playhouse opened its doors
in 2006. It was named after the Lewis family
in recognition of the significant contributions
made during construction of the Cultural Center
by the Lewis Family Foundation. Unlike most
cities who own their venue but allow non-
profit organizations to operate it, the City of
Rancho Cucamonga prides itself on owning and
operating it’s venue. Keeping the LFP united
under the City’s care demonstrates how much
the City values providing quality performances
and live entertainment to its residents and
surrounding communities.
While often perceived as a theatre venue,
the Lewis Family Playhouse is an esteemed
performing arts center that proudly offers
a season of diverse and exciting programs!
It offers a wide range of concerts (rock, jazz,
country, doowop, blues, etc.), Broadway-caliber
musicals and family-friendly plays, plus comedy,
variety (magicians, acrobats, etc.) and dance.
Also, each season local schools take field trips
to the LFP where many children can experience
their first live performance, such as the upcoming
run of Curious George: The Golden Meatball.
Many Inland Empire theatres permanently closed or
shifted programming due to the pandemic which left their
local theatre companies without a place to perform. This
presented an opportunity for the Playhouse to partner
with those companies to produce on the LFP stage
instead of self-producing as it had in the past. These
partnerships maintained opportunities for local talent to
audition and perform in their community.
Proudly serving the community as a favorite local venue
for events and entertainment, the Playhouse is available
to rent for business or personal events. In addition,
the adjoined 4,500 square foot event space can be
transformed into the perfect venue for conferences,
job fairs, networking events, birthdays, anniversaries,
quinceañeras, or celebrations of life.
Performing arts is a vital part of the fabric of Rancho
Cucamonga and there are many ways to be involved in
the arts community such as buying a ticket, becoming
a volunteer, or donating to LFP. There are also
opportunities available to become a show sponsor
or to underwrite discounted tickets to the seniors,
veterans, or underserved youth of the community.
This provides additional opportunities for community
members to experience art and live entertainment,
creating life-long memories.
As it nears the end of its 16th season, the LFP
remains a place of connection and celebration of
live entertainment. With the support of the City
and the community, the Lewis Family Playhouse
will undoubtedly continue to flourish and enchant
audiences for years to come.

TO LEARN MORE.
Although other amenities have been added in recent years, the addition of the dog park is the first major development
of the Central Park area since the community and senior centers were constructed in 2005. In 2017, with community
input, the Rancho Cucamonga City Council began the process of updating the Central Park Master Plan to create a
vision for the remaining park space. The master plan, adopted in 2020, identified smaller, buildable segments ranging
in size from 3 to 10 acres. During this process, the community identified a dog park as one of the top “passive facilities”
for Central Park. Using this feedback, the City designated a 4.4-acre site at Central Park for a future dog park. In 2019,
the City received grant funding for the project by the California Department of Parks & Recreation and through the
assistance and support of Assemblymember James Ramos.
Construction on the dog park began in May 2022 but the project faced several delays due to supply chain, logistical
disruptions and an above-average rainy season. The development of the park also included undergrounding major
utilities for the project as well as for future phased developments.
With the opening of The Bark at Central Park, the dog park at Etiwanda Creek Park has closed permanently. The Bark
at Central Park will now serve as a larger, more centralized space for dogs and their owners and addresses the lack of
amenities experienced by users at the former dog park.

Extreme weather may affect our community with seasonal Santa Ana
winds and a strong El Nino forecasted to bring a wetter-than-average
winter to the region going into the month of March. With the concern
of drought conditions in the State of California, you might think rainfall
would bring relief, but it can result in extreme flooding conditions
because the ground simply cannot absorb water quickly enough.
Flash flooding is a common problem in our area, but are you prepared
for it? The Fire District encourages everyone to be “ReadyRC” by
ensuring preparations for an emergency are made early.
If heavy rains, a windstorm or earthquake were to happen, would
you know where to find the most current information about weather
warnings, road closures, and evacuation shelters for Rancho
Cucamonga? City and Fire District staff are committed to keeping
current information and alerts posted on the City’s website as well
as social media channels along with RCTV-3.
Protect your property.
If weather predictions include rain, take early action by placing
sandbags in flood-prone areas to minimize damage to your home or
property. A limited quantity of sandbag materials are offered free to
all Rancho Cucamonga residents at designated fire stations. If winds
are forecasted, remove patio furniture or precarious tree branches that
could break and cause subsequent damage to structures or vehicles.
Regular maintenance of rain gutters and drains before the rainy season
or after heavy winds, will also keep your property storm ready.

Ride the storm out safely.
Rain or windstorms can often cause power outages or power
surges. Candles are not recommended for emergency lighting.
Flashlights and emergency glow sticks are a much safer
alternative. Loss of power or heat often leads to creative solutions
that aren’t safe either. BBQs, generators or portable gas-powered
appliances commonly produce poisonous carbon monoxide and
should never be used indoors. In a power outage, smoke and
carbon monoxide alarms will rely on their back-up battery so be
sure to test them regularly to ensure they are working properly.
Be cautious when driving.
Heavy rain or strong winds can make driving conditions very difficult
with downed power lines, trees or other debris in the roadway.
Always slow down, allow extra room between you and cars around
you to avoid a collision. Report downed power lines or trees so that
crews can respond quickly to clear the roadway at CityofRC.us or
on the City’s RC2Go application.
Keep this information handy by downloading
the Fire District’s ReadyRC guide, on what to
do before, during and after an emergency. Be
sure to follow the City of Rancho Cucamonga

media outlets so you get official, accurate and

MARCH 30 | 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM
One of most recognized climate celebrations,
Earth Hour puts a spotlight on the unique
biodiversity found on earth and the looming
threat of climate change.
To celebrate, participates are encouraged to turn off
non-essential lights in their home for one hour.
Rancho Cucamonga is planning for a climate resilient future.
The City’s Climate Action Plan lays a foundation for a more
sustainable community through thirteen goals that aim to
reduce greenhouse gas emission. Building energy is the
City’s second largest greenhouse gas emitter at 45% of
community-wide emissions. The City is developing plans
to reduce energy use at city-owned facilities through
equipment upgrades and behavior changes to reach
our energy reduction goals.
Earth Hour can go beyond one hour of darkness. This
winter, think about ways that you can restore our planet
through more thoughtful energy use.
Winter Energy-Saving Tips:
LOWER WATER HEATING COSTS
Reduce your water heating bill by keeping the temperature
at 120° F. Most water heaters are set to 140° F, which can
increase instances of scalding. Winter also means holiday
travel. If you plan to be gone for more than 3 days, it is
recommended to lower the water heater to the lowest
level possible. The Department of Energy’s Energy Saver
Program has step-by-step instructions on how to adjust
the water heater’s temperature.
FIND AND SEAL LEAKS
Areas that are more susceptible to cool air drafts are doors,
window frames, electrical outlets, vents, and wall mounted
AC units. It’s a good idea to complete annual draft checks
around your home. Look for sunlight through cracks, listen
for equipment rattling when nearby doors or windows are
closed, and feel for cool air around joints and fixtures in
your home to check for cracks where you could be losing
heating. Your local hardware store will have caulk and other
weatherizing materials to seal the leaks.
LOWER YOUR HOLIDAY ENERGY COSTS
Light emitting diode (LEDs) are more energy efficient than
traditional lightbulbs, which makes them the obvious choice
for an energy efficiency switch. Not only are LED lights
good for indoor use but are widely used in holiday string
lights. One way to ensure that you’re buying energy saving
string lights is to look for the ENERGY STAR certified LED
label on the packaging. Ready to retire your old holiday
lights? Consider LEDs!
By choosing one of these actions leading up to Earth
Hour, you’re helping bring awareness to energy
efficiency practices. Use #BiggestHourforEarth and
#MyHourforEarth on Earth Hour to show your support.

The Right Choice:
For You, Your Pet and
Rancho Cucamonga
Your cat or dog will be…
Healthier and live a longer, happier life
Friendlier, better behaved, and less likely to fight, bite, or run away
More affectionate
Less likely to spray and mark territory
In 2022, the City of Rancho Cucamonga implemented a city-
wide food waste collection program for residents, a requirement
of Senate Bill 1383, to reduce organic waste disposal by 75%
by 2025. Residents can now place their bagged food waste and
food soiled paper in the green waste collection container.
To make this program more successful, the City has handed out
food waste pails to help capture food scraps. Currently, close
to 2,000 food waste pails have been distributed.
Another element of SB 1383 is the City’s requirement to procure
recycled organic products. Since implementation, the City has
procured 2,345 tons of compost and mulch for free self-serve
pick up events for residents and also used at City parks.
The City has continued to implement curbside collection of organics
from residents, host compost giveaway events, use compost on city
properties, and offer EcoHero performances to schools.
The City has recently begun distributing a limited number of backyard
compost bins to residents who attend a workshop. These bins will allow
interested residents the opportunity to start backyard composting food
scraps at home. Additionally, residents can also watch the premiere of
videos featuring recipes from the Zero Waste Kitchen, which can be
found online at www.CityofRC.us/Sustainability.
The continued efforts of residents combined with businesses
to reduce food waste will move the City closer to the 75%
waste reduction goal. With the City’s commitment to
providing resources and education, we are dedicated
to making a positive impact on the environment.

THE POWER OF NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHGROUPS
Neighborhood Watch Groups
are grassroots initiatives where
residents actively collaborate to
prevent crime and enhance security
within their community.
Here in Rancho Cucamonga—where
safety is paramount—these groups
are driven by concerned residents who
look out for each other, report suspicious
activities, and work closely with the
Rancho Cucamonga Police Department
to address local safety concerns.

Benefits of Joining or Starting
a Neighborhood Watch:
Crime Deterrence
The presence of an active neighborhood watch can
deter criminals from targeting a community. Criminals
are less likely to commit crimes when they know that
vigilant neighbors are watching and reporting.
Rapid Response
Neighborhood watch groups provide a quicker
response to emergencies and suspicious activities.
Residents become the eyes and ears of law
enforcement, helping them address issues promptly.
Unity and Empowerment
These groups foster a sense of unity among
neighbors, creating a tight-knit community that stands
together against crime. This empowerment boosts
the overall quality of life in the neighborhood.
Information Sharing
By joining a neighborhood watch, you gain access to
valuable safety information, crime prevention tips, and
community updates. This knowledge can help protect
your family and property.
Social Interaction
Being part of a neighborhood watch is an excellent
way to meet and connect with your neighbors.
Building these relationships can lead to lifelong
friendships and a stronger community spirit.
Residential Property Value
Safe neighborhoods are attractive to homebuyers,
leading to potential increases in property values. By
participating in a neighborhood watch, you contribute
to maintaining the desirability of your community.
If a neighborhood watch already exists in your area,
joining is a simple yet impactful step toward
contributing to the safety of our #RCcommUNITY.
Act today! Be a catalyst for positive change
in your community’s safety and well-being.
