Jennifer Nakamura ................................Planning Director Maritza Martinez ...........................Public Works Director “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” - Winston Churchill Over 18 years ago, I came to Rancho Cucamonga. It was the opportunity of a lifetime to work for my hometown, one of the premier communities in Southern California and the jewel of the Inland Empire. Fourteen years ago, I was fortunate to interview for and step into the City Manager role when my predecessor, Jack Lam, retired after several decades of exceptional leadership. At the time, we were navigating the Great Recession, and the State faced a multi-year structural deficit. The Redevelopment Agency was about to be eliminated, and significant change was on the horizon. In the years since, the City, under the steady hand and thoughtful guidance of the City Council, has continued to prosper. Central Park has grown with the addition of the outdoor pavilion, the fitness court, Freedom Courtyard, and The Bark at Central Park with the iconic big yellow dog. At the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center, the Randall Lewis Second Story and Beyond® interactive discovery space opened, and the redesigned outdoor courtyard will soon be complete. Victoria Gardens continues to thrive as one of the premier outdoor shopping centers in the country, with new stores and restaurants added regularly. West Foothill Boulevard has been reimagined into a stunning gateway, and the former Empire Lakes site is now The Resort, a vibrant new community. Haven Avenue is evolving into a dynamic mixed-use district, and in the coming years, Brightline West high-speed passenger rail will arrive at Cucamonga Station. Now the time has come to pass the torch to a new era. Elisa Cox, a Rancho Cucamonga resident and long-time employee, has been named the City’s fourth City Manager. She brings experience in a variety of cities and departments and is recognized nationally through her service on the International City-County Management Association board. More importantly, President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” No one cares more than Elisa, and her heart for people will be evident in the years ahead. And so, Rancho Cucamonga, this is my final Grapevine message. Continue to do what you do, be who you are, and keep working together to make our city one of the finest communities in California. Sincerely, John R. Gillison, City Manager CITY MANAGER’S MESSAGE CITY DIRECTORY WALK-IN CENTRAL PARK MONDAY - FRIDAY .........................................................................8:00 am - 8:00 pm SATURDAY .............................................................................................8:00 am - 5:00 pm RC SPORTS CENTER MONDAY - FRIDAY .......................................................................3:00 pm - 8:00 pm SUNDAY ..................................................................................................1:00 pm - 5:00 pm ONLINE RCpark.com REGISTRATION DEC 1 OPEN FOR RESIDENTSDEC 8 OPEN FOR EVERYONE QR codes located throughout the Grapevine will take you to registration and event detail pages for more information. Honoring Heroes Spagnolo 9/11 Memorial Park Brings Community Together On Thursday, September 11, the Rancho Cucamonga community came together for a heartfelt and historic moment — the grand opening of Spagnolo 9/11 Memorial Park. City leaders, Police and Fire District staff, dignitaries, and residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by the City’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Located at 10597 Town Center Drive, the 1.3-acre park provides a welcoming space for reflection, remembrance, and connection. The memorial features steel from the World Trade Center, fragments from Flight 93, and material from the Pentagon — all carefully arranged to represent the geographic relationship of the three sites at a scale of 1/4000. A walking path links the sites, leading visitors toward a central gathering area designed for quiet reflection and community remembrance events. In addition, the park includes a special monument honoring Rancho Cucamonga’s Gold Star Service Members who have given their lives since September 11, 2001. During the ceremony, Fire Chief Mike McCliman highlighted on the park’s two-decade journey — one that began back in 2002 when steel from the World Trade Center first arrived in Rancho Cucamonga for public viewing. He praised not only the City Council, both past and present, but also the community members whose support and dedication helped keep the vision of the memorial alive. Mayor Dennis Michael expressed deep appreciation to Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes for helping secure $3.2 million in state funding to make the park possible. He also paid tribute to the late Councilmember Sam Spagnolo, whose passion and commitment were instrumental in bringing the memorial to life. “This park will stand for generations as a place of remembrance, unity, and hope,” said Mayor Michael. The Spagnolo 9/11 Memorial Park is now open, inviting all Rancho Cucamonga residents to gather, reflect, and honor the lives and legacies that connect us as a community. A Place for Reflection, Remembrance, and Connection Opens in Rancho Cucamonga “Every Gold Star Member whose name is etched into these monuments is a story of courage, family, community, and sacrifice.” - Police Chief Mike Smith “It is a tribute to those we lost, those who served, and those who continue to protect our freedoms.” - Mayor Dennis Michael GRAPEVINE 5 LIVE MUSIC AND DANCE COLORFUL CHALK ART INTERACTIVE ART EXPERIENCES Guests will discover how art connects people, sparks imagination, and brings joy to everyday life. House of Play Indoor Playground 10582 Foothill Boulevard, Suite 170 www.hopindoorplayground.com BUILD YOUR CAREER, SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY! Join Team RC and become part of a forward-thinking organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for our residents and creating a world-class community for all. The City of Rancho Cucamonga offers a wide range of rewarding career opportunities in public service where you can make a meaningful difference in a workplace that values collaboration, professional growth, and a shared commitment to service. Bring your passion for community and innovation! Scan here for more information on our CURRENT JOB OPENINGS or visit www.CityofRC.us/RCjobs Let’s clear up a few myths: “I don’t have enough space.” A foster pet doesn’t need much. A spare bathroom, a cozy corner, or a quiet bedroom can be enough. “Bottle-feeding means sleepless nights.” Newborns do need frequent care at first, but it’s temporary. Most foster families still get a solid stretch of rest. “I already have pets.” Many foster families do too. Keeping animals in separate rooms and practicing good hygiene helps keep everyone safe and happy. The Rancho Cucamonga Animal Center is at full capacity, and the need for loving foster homes has never been greater. By opening your heart and home, even for a short time, you can give a cat, dog, puppy, or kitten the safe space they need until they reach their age for adoption. Fostering is especially important when shelters see an influx of animals. Whether it’s for a few weeks or longer, the difference you make is immeasurable—for both the animals and the families waiting to meet them. Ready to make a difference?
