HomeMy WebLinkAbout87-305 - Resolutions RESOLUTION NO. 87-305 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIFORNIA, EXPRESSING ITS STRONG RECOMMENDATION TO THE CABLE OWNERS AND OPERATORS IN LOS ANGELES AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO RETAIN KCET IN THE AREA OF MOST FAVORABLE ACCESS TO THE PUBLIC WHEREAS, KCET, Channel 28, is the only Public Television Station in the top six national media markets that operates in the Ultra High Frequency Band (UHF), and is therefore subject to the problems associated with UHF broadcasting; and WHEREAS, Public Television Station KCET, despite such disadvantages has diligently and meritoriously served the City of Rancho Cucamonga and other communities within the Southern California area for the past twenty-three years; and WHEREAS, KCET through excellence in programming and quality of service has risen to the position of a major station and a true alternative to other forms of broadcastings; and WHEREAS, KCET in the process of such service has gained the goodwill and dedicated support from the public, who has helped it become one of our major cultural resources; and WHEREAS, KCET is currently positioned in the lower-numbered channeled tier (channel 3) along with the regions major networks and independent stations, which has allowed KCET the visibility to continue its public service and generate community support for its programming; and WHEREAS, KCET requests that the City of Rancho Cucamonga join in support of retaining the station's current channel position and oppose a proposal to realign public television and cable stations which would relocate KCET to the higher/numbered channel tier. NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Rancho Cucamonga City Council does hereby express its strong recommendation to the Cable Owners and Operators in Los Angeles and Southern California to retain KCET in the area of most favorable access to the public, in close proximity to the major and independent stations operating in the UHF band, as a gesture of goodwill and civic cooperation towards one of the region's most valuable cultural resources.
