Disaster Planning
Pets are a part of our families too,and
we need to plan now for their
safety and well-being if an emergency
should occur.
All pet owners should have an emergency supply kit for
their pets. This kit should include:three day supply of
food and water,as well as bowls,a manual can opener,
litter and litter box.Current photos and descriptions
of your pets to help others identify them should also be
included.Pets should wear up-to-date identification,
including the phone number of someone out of the area
in case your pet becomes lost while you're not at home.
Medications, medical records and a first aid kit stored in
a waterproof container should also be included,as well
as sturdy leashes or harnesses, blankets or towels for
bedding and carriers.
Since evacuated pets at shelters will
be kept indoors in a crate,it is
important to accustom them to
being in one in your home. This will
help lessen the stress of new sights,
sounds and smells while giving
them a familiar space in the new
environment.Carriers should be large enough to
comfortably house your pet for
several hours.
If the need arises to evacuate an
area, keep your pet with you.If it
isn't safe for you to stay in the area,
it isn't safe for your pets.Pets that
are turned loose or left behind to
fend for themselves are likely to become victims of
exposure,starvation,predators,contaminated food or
water,or accidents.
Double Discount Spay &Neuter VoucherProgramisBack!
Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption
Center will be joining Centers across the nation on
February 24th in celebrating “Spay Day USA,”an
annual event sponsored by the Humane Society of
the United States. The observance of Spay Day USA
highlights the benefits of spaying and neutering animals while offering City
residents double discounts on the Center's popular spay/neuter voucher
program. These vouchers reduce the cost of this life-saving surgery at
participating veterinarians.From February 24 -March 24,2009,the usual
$50 voucher for dogs will be worth $100 and the $25 voucher for cats will
be worth $50.
In addition to helping homeless pets, there are real benefits to owners who
spay or neuter their pets.Pets are safer, healthier, less expensive to care
for and easier to live with.Spaying and neutering eliminates many house-
breaking problems;reduces dominance behaviors which can be a source of
aggression towards children;and reduces or eliminates cancers and other
health problems.
More animals are being born than there are homes for,
which contributes to the national tragedy of pet
euthanasia that takes place across the country every
day. Please spay or neuter your pet and help end
animal overpopulation in our community!
