LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Board of Trustees was held on Thursday, October 7, 2021, in
the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 10500 Civic Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga,
California. President Janet Temkin called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Present were Members DeVries, Miller, Murrieta-Morales, Temkin and Wells.
Also present were: Julie A. Sowles, Library Director, Wess Garcia, Deputy Library Director and
Jennifer Palacios, Executive Assistant II.

B.CONSENT CALENDAR
C.LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S STAFF REPORTS
B1. Consideration of Meeting Minutes for the Regular Meeting of September 2, 2021
MOTION: Moved by Member Murrieta-Morales, seconded by Member DeVries, to approve
Consent Calendar Item C1. 5-0-0.
C1. Verbal Report of General Library Update. Presented by Julie A. Sowles, Library Director.
Library Director Sowles presented an oral Library Services update report.
C2. Verbal Report of Children’s Services, Adult Services and Library Programming. Presented
by Wess Garcia, Deputy Director of Library Services.
Deputy Director of Library Services Garcia presented an oral update regarding upcoming
Library Service Programs.
D.BOARD BUSINESS
D2. BOARD MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS. (Comments to be limited to three minutes per
Board Member.)
Board Member Murrieta-Morales shared about her experience at the recent Serving with a
Purpose Conference and one of her takeaways was the importance of wearing a name
badge while attending other City events.
Board Member Miller stated she enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Serving with a
Purpose Conference.

E.IDENTIFICATION OF ITEMS FOR THE NEXT MEETING
Library Director Sowles asked the Board if there were services or programs, they would like to
see staff presentations on at future Board Meetings.
Board Member Murrieta-Morales stated she is always interested in what the Teen Advisory
Group (T.A.G.) is doing and raised the idea of a T.A.G. member coming to a future meeting to
share details about the program.
President Pro Tem DeVries stated she would like to learn more about English as a Second
Language (ESL) programming and resources as well as Library outreach.
Board Member Miller stated she is interested in hearing about collection development for non-
English language collections and the possibility of adding an additional bookclub focusing on
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) authors.
President Temkin stated she would like to learn more about the collaboration taking place
between the Library and local school districts.
F.IDENTIFICATION OF ITEMS FOR THE NEXT MEETING
President Temkin adjourned the meeting at 6:39 p.m. to November 4, 2021.
