DESIGN FOR PEOPLE FIRST
Great Pedestrian Environments:
•Safe and protected
•Welcoming and interesting
•Easy to access destinations
•Buildings close to sidewalks
•Access is from the sidewalk
•Minimal to no vehicle conflicts
•Buildings scaled to width of
street
Considerations of Drive Throughs as Permitted Use
•Sharply increasing demand
for drive throughs (blame
COVID)
•Some businesses are very
popular
•Some generate decent
revenues
•Some community members
are mobility challenged and
very dependent on cars
•Bad designs affect pedestrian
access and ped environment
•Bad designs can affect street
operations and adjacent
businesses
•Often use lots of land
(potentially low VPA)
•Typically fast food, which
affect health outcomes
•Lines of cars are not
aesthetically pleasing and
affect air quality
•Full prohibition would create
lots of non-conforming uses
Best Practices: Designing Drive Throughs for People
•Buildings front the street with active building elements facing
the street (front doors, windows, etc.)
•Ped access is provided between the building and sidewalk
•Drive-through lane either runs behind/alongside the building or
is integrated into the building
