ommunity. A cmmitment by civic leaders to a plan that pro-

clean, safe community. Opportunities for recreation, shop-
ping, dining, and employment continue to grow.
The commitment to public safety and economic resourceful-

one of safest communities in the nation, while wisely allocat-

The early years of inCorporation were marked
' by careful planning, controlled residential
. 199 development, and improvements of road-
ways and lighting: Soon, attention was
given to expansion of parks and cornmunity facilities, retail
and commercial development and public safety. Development
continues to offer more services to the residents and expansion
of business has lead to more local jobs.
--------- 0 r u t r e---.-.---
••i n ccan expect a continued commitment to the
I12CUthings that have established Rancho
C camonga as a quality community:
• A top priority given to public safety, the expansion of services
where needed, such as crime prevention and officers.
• A commitment to our environment through the continuation
of recycling programs, hazardous waste disposal and educa-
tional programs.
• Fire Safety and Awareness Programs that seek to educate the
public with an emphasis on early education, and prevention.
• Continued efforts by our Disaster Preparedness Office to plan
for any possible emergency and offer educational programs
to the public.
• Sund fiscal management and allocation of resources.
• Controlled development, maximizing opportunities while
maintaining a high standard of living.
expansion of business on Foothill Boulevard
ifrom Haven to the 15 Freeway has been
referred to as the "Golden Mile." Continued commit-
ment to public safety including active crime preven-
tion programs and the addition of patrol officers
means a safer environment for everyone.
Recreational opportunities abound, both in services
provided by the City, and the private sector. Whether
it's an evening at a Quakes game,',playing in an adult
sports league, participating in Little L,eague or AYSO,
enjoying an afternoon movie, a stroll or picnic at the
park, or walking, cycling or horseback riding on one
of our many trails, Rancho Cucamonga offers activi-
ties for all ages and interests.
The opening of our own public library in 1994 was a
major landrnark for the City. It has since established
itself as a progressive entity that continues to stay on
top of technology and the latest trends.
The City's:Animal Shelter, which opened in 1996, pro-
vided a much needed and long awaited service to the
community.
The City's Volunteer Program has utilized hundreds
of volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life.
These volunteers have donated thousands of hours,
contributed time and efforts that the City would oth-
erwise would not have had. Their services have also
saved the City money and have been an important
supplement to the City's services.

Stretch of Base Line Road
Gets A New Look
may have noticed some changes late-
ly along Base Line Road between
Haven and Milliken Avenues. The
Base Line Road Parkway Improvement Project is
nearing completion. Directed at improving pedes-
trian circulation and aesthetics on the north side of
the street along the future Central Park frontage,
the beautification project will provide residents
with a walking path, trees, boulders and mulch.
The project was approved with the 1996/97 Budget
and is funded through Beautification fees.
The project posed unique landscape design chal-
lenges. Due to years of herbicide applications the
parkway was unsuitable for planting. Adding visu-
al interest to the street and setting the walkway
back from the street were primary goals. The
Australian Willow tree was selected for this site
because of its full appearance and hardiness. The
walking path will be enhanced by railroad ties to
provide the rural imagery of a fence.
This project shows true community spirit as it will
be completed with the assistance of volunteers,
who will be installing the railroad ties, mulch and
cobbles. The City of Rancho Cucamonga salutes the
contributions of these volunteers, whose efforts will
be enjoyed by all residents and help enhance the
beauty of our city.

NEW RESCUE TRUCK
GOE l\T' SERIC
he Rancho Cucamonga Fire District has expand-
ed the rescue services it offers through the addi-
tion of a new rescue truck and trailer unit. The
new unit has generated a lot of interest from other
agencies involved in technical rescue because it pro-
vides a comprehensive response to fire and rescue
emergencies.
The truck has several features that are not found on any of
the other units in the Fire District's fleet. Lighting for night
rescues and the air supply for breathing air have been built
into the unit. Additionally, the truck and trailer carry a full
complement of ground ladders, ventilation equipment, air
bags, ropes, jack hammers, generators, compressors and
boring equipment. The unit will be used to perform atito-
mobile extrications, salvage operations, confined space res-
WS
cues, trench rescues, structural rescues (collapsed build-
ings), swift water rescues and canyon rescues.
The new unit is the only one of its kind in the west end of
San Bernardino County that will be staffed 24-hours a day.
This staffing level ensures that all regions within the City
can rely on a quick response time for rescue emergencies.

PARAMEDIC PROGRAM SLASHES RESPONSE TIME IN
HALF IN FIRST YEAR
he Rancho Cucamonga Fire District's paramedic program celebrated its one year anniversary on July 2, 1997.
The most significant accomplishment for the new program has been its demonstrated ability to cut paramedic
response times to Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls from an average of ten minutes to under five min-
utes. This shorter response time means that on average a paramedic can begin appropriate treatment on a
patient much quicker than in the past, a factor which has a significant effect on the treatment and recovery of
cardiac patients.
STATISTICS JULY 1996
THROUGH MAY 1997
Total Number of Patients Treated:
4,187
-= 55.6% of the calls received by the
Fire District were for Emergency
Medical Service (EMS).
----► 62.3% of the EMS calls received
required some form of Advanced Life
Support (ALS) which can only be
provided by a trained paramedic.
---; 37.7% of the calls required Basic Life
Support (BLS) services, which do not
require a paramedic.

Don't for9et to prepare ,our children for emer9encies
•For infants and toddlers, special emphasis should be
placed on making their environment as safe as possible.
•By age three or so, include your children in family discus-

and review safety procedures every six months.
•Show children the safest places to be in each room when an
earthquake hits. Also show them all possible exits from
each room.
