Keep an Eye on Your Private Information
E- mail, the Intemet, automated teller machines (ATM) , computer banl
long distance carriers, even credit cards make our lives more efficient. As
lives become more integrated with technology, keeping our private inforrr
confidential becomes more difficult. Electronic transactions can leave yoi
fraud and other crimes. Following a few simple tips can help keep your code from being cracked.
PASSWORDS
Whether you are on the Internet or an on-line
banking program, you are often required to use a
password.
•The worst passwords to use are the obvious ones,
like family names and street addresses. '
•'The best passwords mix numbers with upper and
lowercase letters.
• A password that is not found in the dictionary is
even better. There are programs that will try every
word in the dictionary in an effort to crack your
security.
The weakest link in a security system is the
human element.
•Limit the number of people who have access to your
codes and passwords.
•Change your password regularly.
•Memorize your password. If you have several, set
up a system for remembering them.
•If you do write down the password, keep it at home
or hidden at work.
•If you have the option of letting your computer or a
Web site remember a password for you, don't use it.
Anyone who uses your machine will have automat-
ic access to information that is password protected.
SHOPPING IN CY6ERSPACE
Ordering merchandise from the Internet is the trend of the
future. Prevent problems before they occur.
• Do business with companies you know and trust. If you haven't
heard of the company before, research it or ask for a paper cata-
log before you decide to order electronically.
• Check with the state consumer protection agency on whether the
company is licensed or registered. Fraudulent companies can
appear and disappear very quickly in cyberspace.
•Understand the offer. Look carefully at the products or services
the company is offering. Know what is being sold, the quantity
being specified, the total price, the delivery date, the return and
cancellation policy, and all the terms of any guarantee.
•Use a secure browser that will encrypt or scramble purchase
information. If there is no encryption software, consider calling
the company's 800 number, faxing your order, or paying with a
check.
• Never give a bank account or credit card number or other per-
sonal information to anyone you don't know or haven't checked
out.
•Don't provide information that isri t necessary to make a pur-
chase. Even with partial information, con artists can make unau-
thorized charges or take money from your account.
•If you have an even choice between using your credit card and
mailing cash, check, or money order, use a credit card. You can
always dispute fraudulent credit card charges but you cari t get
cash back.
Be aware of the threat of personal information theft and it will go a,
long way toward making your electronic transactions safe and private.
For more information about protecting your private information contact the
Rancho Cucamonga Police Crime Prevention Unit at (909) 77-800 or the
National Crime Prevention web site @ vww.weprevent.org.

a commitment to historic reservation
Oy February 17, 1998, the historic Isle House was moved from the northwest cor-
l lner of Highland Avenue and Etiwanda Avenue, to a temporary location on the
west side of Etiwanda Avenue. Through a considerable effort, a permanent site was
located directly north of and adjacent to the temporary location. The agreement to pur-
chase that site was approved by the City Council on February 17, 1999.
Moving the Isle House to a temporary location was the first step in the long process to
restore the structure. Before moving the structure to its permanent location,
oadditional work must be completed including site grading and preparation of the structure's foundation.
I I j°a`Because of the historic significance of the Isle House to
add the community and the desire to assist in the preservation
effort, several local businesses have donated their profes-

assistance in this preservation project.

The classes that meet at Mulberry will incor-
porate all of the social development and
learning objectives that Playschool has
become known for, and will also do some
integration with the County's program. This
collaboration will be beneficial to both the
County's students, as well as our own
Playschool students.
