Are you planning a family
vacation?
Preventing crime during family travel
starts with making sure your home is
protected while you're away. The key
is to make it look like you never left:
6EFORE YOIJ LEAVE . . .
• Keep shades and blinds in their
normal positions.
• Stop mail and newspapers, or ask a
neighbor to pick them up every day.
• Put timers on several household
lights so they turn on and off at
appropriate times.
• Arrange to have the grass mowed
while you're gone.
• Make sure all your door and
window locks. are in working order-
and use them. Activate your home
alarm (if your have one).
PACKING FOR PREVENTION o . .
• Clean out your wallet or purse
before you go; take only essential
credit cards. Plan to use credit cards
or traveler's checks instead of cash
wherever possible.
• Carry your purse close to your body,
or your wallet in an inside front
pocket. Better yet, take a"fanny
pack" or wear a money pouch
under clothes.
• Pack as lightly as possible. Lots of
heavy, cumbersome bags will slow
you down and make you more
vulnerable to getting robbed.
• Expensive, designer luggage can
draw unneeded attention to your
belongings. Pack your things in
inconspicuous bags.
T"lE C7YdpEVINE 2 SUMMEY 100
• Keep a separate record of the
contents of checked luggage. And
keep anything of value such as
medicine and jewelry in a carry-on
that stays with you.
WHI( YOIJ ARE Ol1T AND A6011T. ..
• Don't display expensive jewelry,
cameras, bags and other items that
might draw attention.
• Check maps before you go out so
you can tour confidently.
• Stick to well-lighted, well traveled
streets at all times - no shortcuts.
Always lock your car when it's
parked, even if the stop is brief.
Keep valuables out of sight, prefer-
ably locked in the trunk. Dori t
advertise that you're a tourist by
leaving maps and' guidebooks on
the seat or dashboard - keep them
in the glove compartment.
Traveling safely with your family
also means sticking together and
keeping an eye on your children at
all times. Make sure they know
where you're staying (name and
address), and teach them what to
do if they get lost or separated.
You might want to agree on a
meeting place, just in case. And
by all means, make sure your kids
know not to accept rides or favors
from strangers.
Kids are not waterproof...keeping children safe from drowning
Learn the action steps you can
take for safeguarding children
in and around water!
! KNOW 1NE FACTS
FACT...
! You can prevent childhood drown-
 gsi
FACT . . .
: Drowning is the leading cause of unin-
: tentional injury and death to
children under five years of age in
California.
FACT...
For every drowning death, approxi-
mately two to ten children are hospi-
talized and two to forty children are
seen in emergency rooms and
released.
FACT...
Childhood drowning is not a supervi-
sion issue. Most pool/spa incidents
have occurred with adults present and
engaged in routine activities.
FACT . . .
Children can drown in the time it takes
to answer the phone or door. Children
have drown during surprisingly short
breaks in visual contact with the
guardian
FACT...
Most children who drown
were last seen indoors or out-
doors away from the
pool/spa area and were
under the supervision of a
responsible adult.
Action St PROTECTION
Use layers of barrier protection
between children and water to warn
and impede.
• Position alarms on doors and win-
dows leading to the water. Install
about five feet above ground level
so that a child cannot reach them.
• Place a non-climbable five-foot
fence around the pool/spa that sep-
arates the pool/spa from the resi-
dence. Openings should be no
more than four inches wide so chil-
dren cannot squeeze through the
spaces.
• Have a self-closing and self-latching
fence gates, side gates and doors
leading to the pool/spa area, with
latches above a child's reach (54"
high). Gates should open outward.
. JS_
i' S
 /J \

' • Install
pool safety
covers (power-operated are the safest
and easiest to use).
In addition to the protecrive devices,
roufiinely follow these practices.
• Maintain all safety devices to ensure
they are in good working order.
• Secure and lock all doors, windows
and gates leading to the pool/spa
area when not in use.
• Drain standing water from pool/spa
covers. Remove covers completely
before using pool/spa and replace
them immediately after use.
• Never leave toys in or around the
pool/spa. Place items that can be
used for climbing (tables, chairs and
planters) away from fences

3. If you are alone and the child is not

Beverly Noonan of Rancho Cucamonga
was a tole painter with a mission. She
needed to find a way to paint consistent
dots in sizes she could control.
With help from the Small Business
Development Center, a clever idea and
lots of hard work, Noonan and her hus-
band, Tom, are now helping crafters
across the country paint polka dots
with their new product- The EZ
Dotztool. Noonan and her husband,
Tom, created a small four-pronged tool
that makes dots in four sizes. They
spend their evenings filling EZ Dots
orders and planning marketing sirate-
gies for the hard plastic bright yellow
$5.95 tool they still distribute from their
Rancho Cucamonga home.
The Noonans sought help from the
non-profit Inland Empire Small
Business Development Center (SBDC).
The SBDC assisted the Noonans in
determining the differences between-
resale and wholesale customer bases
and fine tuning their market audience.
The Noonans went on to do brochures
and a web site. As with all SBDC
clients, services were free for the
Noonans. Thousands of clients
throughout the Inland Empire contact
the private non-profit agency for assis-
tance.

EffecHve September 1,1999 the City began a new park monitoring pro-

reservable picnic shelters. The vast majority of _`\
the City's park picnic shelters are still avail- -
able on a first come basis free of charge.
Under the current fee schedule, community non-
profit groups will pay $3 per hour for small picnic shelters and $5 per
hour for large shelters. Residents or private groups will pay $5 to $8 per
hour, and non-residents will pay $8 to $12 per hour.
