HomeMy WebLinkAboutReporter summer 2011CITY OF R:TCIO CUCAIVIONGA FEATURED ON FIRST Y'S LET'S MOVE 'V]EBSITE The City of Rancho Cucamonga's Healthy RC program has been featured on First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! nationwide website. Under the headline "City of Rancho Cucamonga Creates Healthy RC," you'll find a high-profile article enlivened by photos of Grapeland Elementary School students gardening and children and families enjoying the City's parks. Healthy RC is a comprehensive city-wide initiative directed at encouraging healthy and sustainable lifestyles. Consequendy it's a natural to be highlighted by the First Lady's nationwide health effort. Michelle Obama launched the Let's Move! campaign a year ago from the front lawn of the White House. It aims to encourage physical activity across the country, increase access to healthful foods in underserved neighborhoods, provide more healthful food in schools, and educate and empower parents. Healthy RC is the overarching theme of Rancho Cucamonga's recendy updated General Plan, which will ensure the continuation of land use policies and community design that facilitates healthy eating and active living initiatives among children and families in Rancho Cucamonga. Following the national recognition, the City is even exploring the idea of a social media campaign to invite the First Lady to Rancho Cucamonga to see Healthy RC in action for herself. It would be modeled on last year's wildly successful "Rancho Googlemonga" effort to persuade Google to choose Rancho for its Fiber for Communities pilot project. The City's Healthy RC program has been recognized by others. In fact, Rancho is one of 41 sites nation- wide awarded a four-year grant from the Robert WoodJohnson Foundarion "Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities" iniriative to prevent childhood obesity by changing policies and environments to support active living and healthy eating in the community. Healthy RC Kids—the City's long- term, innovative approach '', to reducing childhood , obesiry—is a community- ' led effort committed to modifying the environment so that children consistendy encounter healthy messages and healthy choices that are easily accessible as they go about their daily activities. Parents, students, neighborhood leaders, local businesses, and other community organizations are encouraged to join the Healthy RC Kids Partnership. Together we can create significant changes that will empower children and families to lead healthy lives. "Rancho Cucamonga has proven to be a fantastic place to do business." "We like Rancho a lot," adds Greg Anderson. "The City is fabulous to work with—very helpful and professional." Kobe offers both sushi cuisine as well as Teppan-style dining in which diners admire chefs theatrically preparing food at tableside grills. Anson, working as a chef in Phoenix, spent two years seeking the ideal community for his restaurant. Why Rancho? "The people are nice, the incomes are high, the City is planned in a very high quality way, and the schools are excellent. I like it here." The point about excellent schools is important to Anson. Kobe Japanese House opened on October 10, and his first child, a daughter, was born October 14. "My life has changed," he says. "The restaurant is building up a group of regulars and my daughter is growing every day." Every day, Anson and staff concentrate on producing the excellent quality food. "And then, of course, we care about the business, we care about the customers. We tallc to everybody." Two local programs focus on childrens' safety issues—the annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo and the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program. The lOth Annual Ron ives Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be held on Saturday morning, May 21 from 8:00 am to noon at Victoria Arbors Park. The rodeo is a major local event—more than 1,000 people attended last year. The goal is to teach bicycle safety. Kids can take their bikes and ride the obstacle course. They will encounter a zig-zagging course, challenging curves, and special features such as working traffic signals and railroad crossing arms. Adding to the fun, police deputies traditionally man oversized griddles turning out free pancake breakfasts. - In the meantime, the City has launched aH, , what's known as the "Safe Routes to School Program" at three schools in the Cucamonga School District. The program teaches students -" ' about traffic safety by letting them walk or » F ride in a traffic simulated environment. The Safe Routes to School Program consists of a three- pronged approach that includes: ParendAdministrator workshops, Student Workshops, and a school-wide bike rodeo assembly. Unlike rote memorization of traffic laws and rules, a hands-on approach teaches children to identify problems and determine safe choices in pedestrian and bicyclist behavior. The Safe Routes to School Program is a partnership with the San Bernardino County Public Health Department. The first three schools in the program are Cucamonga Elementary School, Los Amigos Elementary and Rancho Cucamonga Middle School. The City has received an additional federal SRTS grant to expand the program to five schools along the Pacific Electric Trail—Grapeland Elementary, Carlton P. Lightfoot Elementary, Victoria Groves Elementary, Etiwanda Intermediate School, and Cucamonga Middle School. This expanded program is being undertaken in partnership with the Friends of the Pacific Electric Trail to encourage students to utilize the trail as a means to getting to and from school. As temperatures start to rise we must remind ourselves how the warm weather will impact our pets. Whether taking a wallc, a drive or just hanging out in the backyard, there are extra precautions that people can take to keep their four-legged family members happy and safe. 1. Never leave a pet unattended in the car or an unventilated room on a warm or sunny day. It's animal cruelty and potentially lethal. Cars quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures even with the window slightly open. 2. Warm weather is the prime time for parasites. Fleas and ticks stay busy in warm weather and summer is also peak season for heartworms. Be sure to keep pets up-to-date on their vaccinations and preventative medications. 3. When taking a dog for a walk on a hot day, plan for shorter walks midday when temperatures peak, and longer walks in the morning and evening when it's cooler. Hot sidewalks and asphalt can burn the pads on a dog's paws, so walk on the grass when possiUle. Gas prices got you down? Airline fuel surcharges creating sticker shock? Wondering how you will manage a family vacation this summer? Don't give up on summer fun, just come to the Rancho Cucamonga Library for a"stay-cation" and read your way around the world through our Summer Reading Club! Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful to not over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it's eartremely hot. 5. Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one- inch length, never to the skin, so your dog still has some protection from the sun. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. 6. When driving with pets, be sure to keep them properly restrained and inside the vehicle. Special seatbelts and secured carriers can prevent them from distracting the driver and protect pets in the case of an accident. The back of a pick-up truck is never a safe place for a pet to ride. 7. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool. Not all dogs are good swimmers. Cocoa mulch has an appetizing scent to some animals and can be deadly if ingested. Pesticides, rodenticides (mouse and rat baits), citronella candles, insect coils, snail bait, fertilizers and other harsh chemicals can also be fatal.
