Thomas, Management Analyst II ~, ~ DATE: June 25, 2003 SUBJECT: Tour of the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for the Arts & Crafts -- Next Department Head Monthly Meeting (July 7, 2003) As a supplement to the next monthly Department meeting, we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to take a tour of the Maloof Foundation for the Arts and Crafts on Monday, July 7, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. --lasting until approximately 11:00 a.m. This is an exciting opportunity to tour the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation complex, which is a unique site in the City that includes a handcrafted residence, a guesthouse, and workshops of the renowned woodworker, furniture maker and designer, Sam Maloof, whose work has been celebrated and featured in exhibits across the country, including the Smithsonian Institute. The structures of the Maloof complex are designated as an official historic site by the City and are included as one of twenty-eight national Trust for Historic Preservafion's 'Historic Artists' Homes and Studios' Associate Sites across the country. Moreover, the California Office of Historic Preservation has nominated these structures for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens surrounding the Sam Maloof historic home and studios also have a distinct regional character. Mayor Pro Tem Diane Williams, serves on the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts & Crafts Board, and wanted to be able to bring this extraordinary cultural resource to you. The Maloof Foundation is located at 5131 Carnelian Street (a map and parking instructions will be provided for those who can attend). If you are interested in attending, please confirm with Donna Kendrena at extension 2015.
