A RES~-UTION OF TIlE CITY COUNCIL OF TIlE CITY OF RANCRO
CUCANONGA, CALIFOIL~IA, URCINC APPROVAL OF STATE L~CISLATION
AUTHORIZING A PUBLIC VOTE FOR A COUNTY TRANSPORTATION SALES
TAX
WHEREAS, state and federal gasoline taxes and other transportation
revenues are, and rill continue to be, inadequate to meet our state highvay
construction needs, even though ye continue to receive our equitable share of
those funds; and
WHgREA.q, our local city streets are in great need of additional
revenue for rehabilitation and ney construction, since current gasoline taxes
are cons, ned by maintenance costs; and
WREREAS, the state is encouraging counties to adopt transportation
revenue of their own, and is increasingly re~arding those counties vho have
done so; and
WREREA~, a sound transportation system vhich keeps pace vith growth is
vital to securing new jobs for our residents, thereby reducing long commutes;
and
WRERF.~k.q, three counties (Santa Clara, Alameda, and Fresno) have
adopted such measures, and others are planning to do so; and
WllEREAS, a one-half cent sales tax for a specified period of years, to
be spend on a voter-approved program of projects, appears to be the most fair
and productive method of local funding; and
WHEREAS, the San Bernardino Associated Governnnents (SANBAG) has
initiated a program leading to a public vote for such a tax; and
WHEREAS, the initial step requires passage by the state le$islature
and sisnature by the Governor of an enabling bill authorizing the public vote.
NO~, THeReFORE, BE IT RES(I. VED, that the Rancho Cucamonga City Council
does hereby encourage those state legislators representing the City of Rancho
Cucamonga, and the Covernor of the State of California, to approve legislation
allowing the voters of San Bernardino County to vote upon a special sales tax
for transportation projects vithin said County and vlthin the City of Rancho
Cucamonga.
