Well, you could in 1920 via the Pacific Electric Railway that is now , known as the Pacific Electric Trail! The Pacific Electric Trail follows the route of the legendary Pacific Electric Railway,an electrified railway system famous for their"Red Cars"that spanned from the Pacific _ _- coast through Los Angeles and traveled as far east as San Bernardino. The building of the railway through the Inland Empire was crucial to the development of the area, particularly to support the agricultural 1 industry that fueled the local economy. The San Bernardino County .. portion of the railway was used extensively in transporting products from the citrus and wine making areas of Cucamonga and Redlands = --- to Los Angeles and the rest of the United States. In later years, the railway was used for moving war time materials and troops to the ports of Los Angeles.Once the world's largest interurban and street railway system, the Pacific Electric Railway ended operation during the 1950's with the expansion of the Southern California freeway system. The City of Rancho Cucamonga, acting as the lead agency in the reimagination of what the Pacific Electric Railway could be,joined together with the San Bernardino Associated Governments(SANBAG) \ and surrounding cities to develop a multi-purpose trail that would link the =• _ cities of Claremont,Montclair,Upland,Rancho Cucamonga,Fontana, and ' Rialto. The trail officially opened in the early 2000's and included parts of the old historic railway on the Route 66 trailhead to pay homage to its original use. The Pacific Electric Trail and the 36 miles of recreational t trails in Rancho Cucamonga are an integral part of the City's commitment to promoting a healthy, active, and environmentally responsible lifestyle. In 2021,during the height of the COVI D-19 pandemic, when fitness options were significantly reduced,Rancho Cucamonga unveiled the trail's newest health and wellness amenity. The exciting Fitness Court®,created by National Fitness Campaign is an open-air exercise facility that allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. Global climate change, often referred to as global warming, has increased the severity and durations of extreme weather events such as drought. In recent history, the State experienced a multi-year drought from 2011-2014 in which then-Governor Jerry Brown imposed water restrictions to conserve water. The 2011-2014 drought was, at the time, the worst single drought in California history(Griffen &Anchukaitis, 2014), however, the current drought is anticipated to be far more severe with water levels in reservoirs and snowpack falling to historic lows. Current Drought Information California's current drought was declared a state emergency on October 10, 2021, by Governor Gavin Newsom. The current drought is the worst in California's history and it is impacting the entire Western United States. Nearly 60%of California is experiencing extreme drought. Thus far, 2022 has been the driest year in the past 128 years(NIDIS, 2022). Rancho Cucamonga Water Supply The City's water supply is distributed via the Cucamonga Valley Water District(CVWD). CVWD provides water to the City from a combination of local groundwater, imported water that is purchased through the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA)via the Metropolitan Water District(MWD), recycled water, and local canyon and tunnel water. Nearly 48%of Rancho Cucamonga's water comes from groundwater and approximately 46%is imported through IEUA(CVWD, n.d.). Impacts on Rancho Cucamonga and City Actions to Reduce Water Use Community members in Rancho Cucamonga have been asked to cut water usage to meet state mandates through reductions in watering lawns. CVWD has called upon customers to limit outdoor water to 4:00 pm through 9:00 am only three days per week based upon address numbers with odd number addresses watering on Tuesdays,Thursdays, and Saturdays and even number addresses watering on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.Watering on Mondays is not permitted (CVWD, 2022). _ The City of Rancho Cucamonga has, in accordance with State requirements, ceased watering on "non-functional" grass in Landscape Maintenance Districts(LMDs)2, 4R, 6, and 7 and City owned facilities. These areas of grass in parkways(the area between sidewalks and the street)are considered decorative only and may begin to appear dry and no longer green due to the statewide water conservation mandates. Grass used for recreation (such as sports fields, school yards, and parks) will still be watered, as will areas with trees.
