A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO
CUCAMONGA, CALIFORNIA, APPROVING HISTORIC LANDMARK
96-01 TO DESIGNATE THE MALOOF RESIDENCE ,AND
WORKSHOPS, LOCATED AT 9553 HIGHLAND AVENUE, AS A
LANDMARK, AND MAKING FINDINGS IN SUPPORT THEREOF -
APN: 202-101-18.
A. Recitals.
1. The San Bernardino Associated Governments has filed an application for
Landmark Designation 96-01 as described in the title of this Resolution. Hereinafter in
this Resolution, the subject Landmark designation request is referred to as "the
application."
2. On April 24, 1996, the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Rancho
Cucamonga conducted a duly noticed public headng on the application and
recommended approval.
3. On May 15, 1996, the City Council held their meeting and concluded said
meeting on that date.
4. ,All legal prerequisites to the adoption of this Resolution have occurred.
B. Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, it is hereby found, determined, and resolved by the City
Council of the City of Rancho Cucamonga as follows:
1. This Council hereby specifically finds that all of the facts set forth in the Recitals,
Part "A," of this Resolution are true and correct.
2. The application applies to approximately 5 acres of land, basically a rectangle
configuration, located at 9553 Highland Avenue.
3. Based upon substantial evidence presented to this Council, including minutes
of the public hearing by the Historic Preservation Commission on April 24, 1996, written
and oral staff reports, and pursuant to Section 2.24.090 of the Rancho Cucamonga
Municipal Code, this Council hereby makes the following findings and facts:
a. Historical and Cultural Significance:
Finding 1:
The proposed Landmark was connected with someone
renowned or important or a local personality.

Fact/s:
The property is the home and studio of the internationally
acclaimed woodworker and furniture designer, Sam
Maloof, and his wife Alfreda Ward Maloof, a former Santa
Fe museum and crafts program director. Sam Maloof
began making his furniture at his Alta Loma workshop in
the 1950's. His work can be seen in a number of Amedcan
museums, and has been featured in numerous television
and film productions as well as popular and scholarly
works on American furniture and crafts. His home/studio
has been a pilgrimage site for local colleges and
universities, and the Gamble House Associates of
Pasadena conduct an annual tour to the property.
Historic Architectural and Engineering Significance:
Finding 1:
The construction materials or engineering methods used in
the proposed Landmark are unusual or significant or
uniquely effective.
Fact/s:
The home/studio exhibit an exceptional level of
craftsmanship and design. Hand-built homes became part
of the popular culture of the 1960s and 1970s as part of
the back-to-earth counterculture movement.
Finding 2:
The overall effect of the design of the proposed Landmark
is beautiful, or its details and materials are beautiful or
unusual.
Fact/s:
Sam Maloof's house and workshop are both the products
of necessity which evolved over time. The house is also a
product of its builder's creativity, his love of his craft and its
raw material, wood. Every detail is crafted to reflect
Maloof's sense o~ design and passion for wood.
4. This Council hereby finds that the project has been reviewed and considered in
compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970, as amended, and the
Guidelines promulgated thereunder, as Landmark designations are exempt under CEQA,
per Class 3.e.
5. Based upon the findings and conclusions set forth in paragraphs 1, 2, 3, and 4
above, this Council hereby approves Landmark Designation 96-01.
6. The Mayor shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution.
