HomeMy WebLinkAbout93-004 - ResolutionsRESOLUTION NO. 93-004 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO ~, CAT ,TFOlqNIA, SUPPOl~JlqG LOCATION OF A DEP~ OF DEF~qSE ACODUNTING C~:~fER AT THE SITE OF NOlq1'~:)N AIR FORCE BASE IN SAN BERNARDINO, CAT,TFORNIA WHEREAS, Norton Air Force Base is in the process of closing as part of our nation's def~ reduction, and is therefore being proposed for various reuse activities under the jurisdiction of the Inland Valley Development Agency; and WHEREAS, Norton AFB has housed for several decades, in addition to flying missions, a large variety of sizeable Air Force support units, including audit, Inspector Gep~ral, safety, and audiovisual functions; and WHEREAS, because of this background and many other similar public and private operations in the general location, the San Bernardino area has an ~ of skilled workers who can respond immediately to the needs of such an Accounting Center; and WHEREAS, California State University San Bernardino has a highly acclaimed undergraduate and graduate program in accounting, with a great many well-qualified graduates annually, and with other four year and two year colleges and Universities also providing an ample supply of accounting technicians at all levels; and WHEREAS, the area has experienced~ and is continuing to experience, dramatic and debilitating job losses in a great many occupational sectors, as a consequence of both defense reductions and the general economic distress; WHEREAS, other recent and planned job-site closures, both military and corporate, including George AFB, Kaiser Steel, Lockheed Aircraft, General Dynamics, and TRW, have similarly devastated the area economically; and WHEREAS, the San Bernardino area offers an affordable housing market and many other welcome attributes to new employees, even beyond the sizeable labor force already available; and WHEREAS, siting of a Defense Accounting Center at Norton AFB enjoys enthusiastic county-wide support, because it becomes a major employer and econo~nic asset throughout our far-flung county and in the multi-county region while also dramatically reducing long distance comnutes and the air pollution associated with the wasteful travel; and WHEREAS, all the jurisdictions in San Bernardino County will find themselves and their workforces similarly benefitted by the location of such a center. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Rancho Cucamonga does hereby support and endorse the proposal by the Inland Valley DeveloFm~_nt Agency and urges the Department of Defense to approve location of a Defense Accounting Center at the site of the Norton Air Force Base.
