TO Chair and Members of Historic Preservation Commission

SUBJECT FOOTHILL BOULEVARD/ROUTE 66 VISUAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT -CITY
OF RANCHO CUCAMONGA -Review the Draft Histoncal Resources Clearance
Report for Foothill Boulevard between Grove and Vineyard Avenues and direct Staff
to update the City Histonc Site List
BACKGROUND Cultural resources investigations were performed for the widening and
improvement of Foothill Boulevard between Grove and Vineyard Avenues A records search and an
archaeological field survey were performed for the area of direct impact within the improvement
protect area No archeological resources were identified Structures and other resources in the area
were inventoned, recorded, and evaluated This information is contained in the attached State
Department of Parks and Recreation DPR 523 forms (see Exhibit "A") Within the Protect Area, 28
structures, 1 road, and 1 bridge were identified Of these 30 sites, 11 were constructed in 1957 or
later Of the remaining 17, one property (Klusman House) was found eligible for listing on the NRHP
(Nation Register of Historic Places) or the CRHP (California Register of Histonc Resources) Of the
properties which pre-date 1957, 8 were found ineligible for listing on the NRHP or CRHP, but were
regarded as eligible for local listings as City of Rancho Cucamonga Landmarks or Points of Interest,
or were already designated City Landmarks Because of alterations or lack of associations with
histonc themes, 11 of the properties constructed pnor to 1957 were regarded as ineligible
ANALYSIS The identified sites are listed in the Table attached (Exhibit "B") with new information
indicated in bold text These changes will be added to the City's Histonc Srte list as directed by the
Histonc Preservation Commission
RECOMMENDATION By minute order, direct Staff to update the City Historic Sde List as
presented in this report

The Kramer Brothers Nursery was opened on this site in 1927 by Otto and August Kramer Natwes of New York, the brothers
/first nursery operation was started in 1914 in their home state Relocating to the West, Kramer Brothers at one time operated
commerical nurseries at live locations in Southern Calitomia The location at Red Hill apparently became the center o1 the
Kramer Brother's operation in 1927
Initially the principle product was cut /lowers, but when /ashion trends changed during the 1930s, they switched to raising
azaleas and camellias During this time, the nursery developed several registered vanet~es o/ camelias, including Kramer's
Supreme, ° °M~ss Universe,' `Mt Shasta, ° °Pat Nixon, ° "Fmlandia," "In the Pink° and "Sunset Oaks "Kramer Brothers were cited
in the American Came//ra Yearbook for their work in 1957, 1974 and 1979
Otto Kramer was bom New York in 1875 and died in San Bemardrno County in 1942 His wile Addie Kramer was bom 1883 and
died in Rancho Cucamonga in 1969 They lived at 1840 Red Hrll Country Club Road It is presently unknown r/ they had any
children August Kramer was born in 1880 in New York and died in Ontario in 1973 His wile's Iamily name was Fehleise (lust
name, and date of birth and death unknown) They had two children, Mane L bom 1916 and a male child bom 1920 The male
child evidently died young, it not at birth Mane L Kramer married Ben Mackell, and evidently they managed the nursery otter
the death o1 August Kramer until it closed, apparently at some point a/tar 1980
