STAFF REPORT • PLANNING DEPARTMENT Ltigej DATE: April 22, 2009 RANCHO • CUCAMONGA TO: Chairman and Members of the Historic Preservation Commission FROM: James R. Troyer, AICP, Planning Director BY: Mayuko Nakajima, Assistant Planner • SUBJECT: National Historic Preservation Month 2009 GENERAL: The National Trust for Historic Preservation will commemorate the fifth annual National Preservation Month in May 2009. The idea behind Preservation Month is to celebrate the country's diverse and irreplaceable heritage by participating in local events throughout the nation. Last year, the Planning Department held kick-off events that created awareness of local history by holding an "open house" and introducing the program to local residents and to City staff. This year, staff desires to expand on this idea and have planned additional activities. In addition, two members from local historical societies have volunteered to collaborate with staff to make this a memorable event. The following is a list of potential activities anticipated for this year's Preservation Month: Date Details of event • Wednesday, May 6th Proclamations presented by the City Council in recognition to both historic societies. Saturday, May 9th Mother's Day Tea hosted by the Etiwanda Historical Society. Land Use Open House "Community Fair" at Central Park. We will have a booth and interested stakeholders will be invited by creating a display and Saturday, May 16th talk about local history to other fellow residents and stakeholders. We would also like to have a cake-walk and bake-sale to raise funds for gift cards or refreshments that will be provided for a future event. Have informational historic booth displays showcased at the Tuesday, May 19th Biane Library. Preservation stakeholders will be encouraged to speak about their displays with interesting facts and stories. The boards and local history books will be the main focus of the showcase display. 6:00 p.m. at the Tri-Communities Room: Host a reception with refreshments. Display historic boards and pictures from events of this month. Community leaders, City staff, historic property owners, and interested stakeholders will be invited. Proceeds from the bake-sale can • be used to purchase refreshments and balloons for this event. Wednesday, May 27th 7:00 p.m. Historic Preservation Commission meeting: The Commission can hand out "Acknowledgment Certificates" to all historic property owners. In addition, "Preservation Awards" can go to "most improvement (before and after)," "oldest structure" or related category. Staff can present nominees and the Commission can be the final judge. Proceeds from the bake-sale can be used to buy gift cards for the award winners. • • ITEM A HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION STAFF REPORT National Historic Preservation Month May 2009 April 22, 2009 • Page 2 • We have created a children's coloring activity to distribute to both Throughout May libraries. We will encourage the libraries to have these out in the children's area and have them displayed on the walls throughout the month of May. Have residents, community-leaders, and stakeholders pose and take pictures in front of their favorite historic places with "THIS PLACE Throughout May MATTERS" sign available on the National Trust website (these signs are printable at home). The photos can then be emailed or mailed to staff and will be posted on a display board that will be showcased at the May 27th reception. The City can advertise and promote Preservation Month in a variety of ways: • Grapevine • Inland Valley newspaper • Channel 3 • City Manager's Weekly • -Email broadcast • Flyers • Print out flyer in large format and display in the rotunda area during the month of May RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Historic Preservation Commission receive the • staff report and file for future reference.
