LIBRARY'S "DIGITAL STORYTELLING PROJECT FOR LOCAL HISTORY"
GENERAL:
The California State Library offers Library Services and Technology Act grants. The City of
Rancho Cucamonga Library was recently awarded a $10,000 grant for the "California of the
Past" local history grant program. The Library Foundation matched this grant with an additional
$10,000 for a total gain of $20,000 towards this project. As part of the grant, the library received
a video camera, microphone, lighting kit, digital camera, scanner, Mac Powerbook, video editing
software, and technical. training. The purpose of the grant is to record local history stories
utilizing the latest technological equipment. Additionally, with the State Library's funding, a
• small local history room will be created at the Biane Library.
The program is similar to the City's Oral History Program, but will capture short stories (3-5
minutes) of an event, person, place, or family. Multiple media sources such as video, photos,
existing video clips etc. may be used to enhance the digital story. The stories will be uploaded
on the State Library's website and on the Library's YouTube feed. Sample stories created by
the pilot site libraries can be viewed at www.digitalstorystation.com.
The Library is always looking for opportunities to keep abreast of the latest technological
advances for our library services. The Library has a successful track record of receiving and
implementing excellent and innovative projects with State Library funding, such as the Biane
Library at Victoria Gardens.
Planning staff has been worked closely with the Library staff in the preparation to produce the
digital stories. Additionally, the Library staff has been working with members of the local historic
preservation societies. On October 30, 2009 a technical training session was held by the Media
Arts Center to teach staff and society members how to capture meaningful stories and to use
the equipment. The group was introduced to the Digital Story Station interface and the basics of
iMovie software to create recorded interview digital stories.
In May 2010, the Library anticipates the debut of the digital stories at a "Local History Cultural
Arts night," in conjunction with our annual Historic Preservation Month. Staff will continue to
work with the library staff and the historic society members towards finishing this project by May
2010. It is an exciting project that brings cutting-edge technology to local history, which might
• otherwise seem dated and behind the times.
