SUBJECT: NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH 2010
GENERAL: The National Trust for Historic Preservation will commemorate the sixth annual
National Preservation Month in May 2010. The idea behind Preservation Month is to celebrate the
country's diverse and irreplaceable heritage by participating in local events throughout the nation.
This year, the theme is titled, "Old is the New Green." This theme focuses on the "green
movement" and recognizing that preservation has a significant role to play in fostering development
that is more environmentally and economically sustainable. Preservation IS green.
The following is a list of potential activities anticipated for this year's Preservation Month. Details for
additional functions are also currently being reviewed.
Date Details of Event
Saturday, May 1st Annual "Mother's Day Tea" hosted by the Etiwanda Historical Society.
Wednesday, May 5th Proclamation presented by the City Council to the Historic Preservation
Commission in recognition of Preservation Month.
Informational historic booth displays will be showcased at the
Biane Library. Preservation stakeholders will be encouraged to speak
Wednesday, May 19`h about their displays with interesting facts and stories. The display boards,
local history, and "Old is the New Green" concept will be the main focus
of the showcase display.
Sunday, May 23rd The Historical Preservation Association will be hosting it's first "Historic
Home Tour" from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday, June 4th Local History Night at the Biane Library.
"Local History Night" will be an evening event hosted by the Library on Friday, June 4, 2010. The
Library will be showcasing the debut of the Digital Stories on this night to reveal the stories that
have been completed with the recent grant that was awarded earlier last year. Planning staff has
been working with the Library to organize displays retrieved from the archives for this event. Most
of these items have not been displayed to the public before. There will be a variety of ephemera to
look at that will include such themes as: winery, citrus, incorporation, early pioneers, etc.
Additionally, we will be including display boards on how remodeling/rehabilitation of old structures is
a "green" practice.
