Chairman Munoz then led in the pledge of allegiance. ROLL CALL COMMISSIONERS: PRESENT: Richard Fletcher, Frances Howdyshell, Lou Munoz, Francisco Oaxaca, Ray Wimberly ABSENT: None STAFF PRESENT: Steven Flower, Assistant City Attorney; Dan James, Senior Civil Engineer; Lois Schrader, Planning Commission Secretary; James Troyer, Planning Director; Tabe Van der Zwaag, Associate Planner; Donald Granger, Senior Planner; Linda Daniels, Assistant City Manager • ANNOUNCEMENTS A HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION AND PLANNING COMMISSION RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION PRESENTED TO JAMES R. TROYER, PLANNING DIRECTOR The resolution was read and presented to Mr. Troyer by Chairman Munoz. The Commissioners highlighted various accomplishments noted in the resolution such as the partnership developed with the library, increased focus on historic preservation, and the 2010 General Plan Update and the nearly complete Development Code. They thanked him for his help and the professional assistance of his Planning staff. Mr. Troyer expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Commission. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion: Moved by Fletcher, seconded by Oaxaca, carried 3-0-2, (Howdyshell,Wimberly abstain)to approve the minutes of February 8, 2012, Motion: Moved by Wimberly, seconded by Fletcher, carried 4-0-1 (Munoz abstain), to approve the minutes of March 14, 2012. • R A k PUBLIC COMMENTS • None COMMISSION BUSINESS AND COMMENTS • Chairman Munoz noted that two reports had been requested with respect to the Cour House and the Thomas Winery. He asked if staff had any feedback on those items. He asked that update reports regarding the Cour House and the Thomas Winery be brought forward at the next meeting. Henderson, AICP, Principal Planner BY: Daniel Correa, Assistant Planner SUBJECT: NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH ACTIVITIES FOR MAY 2012 GENERAL: The National Trust for Historic Preservation will commemorate the annual National Preservation Month in May 2012. The idea behind Preservation Month is to celebrate the country's diverse and irreplaceable heritage by participating in local events throughout the nation. This year, the theme is titled, "Discover America's Hidden Gems." This theme focuses on promoting places that have historic significance but may be unfamiliar or unknown to the general community. National Preservation's intent is to "reach out to a growing audience of neighbors, tourists, students, and preservationists" to make them aware of our rich heritage "by promoting the historic places in your community and encourage newcomers to learn more about preservation programs." Preservation IS discovery of hidden historic treasures. The following is a list of potential activities anticipated for this year's Preservation Month. Details for additional functions are also currently being reviewed. • Date Details of Event Annual Mother's Day Tea hosted by the Etiwanda Historical Society with Saturday, May 5`" @ this year's theme as "Time for Tea with Mother Goose" at Etiwanda 11:30 a.m. Gardens (Contact EHS at 909-899-8432 or log onto www.etiwandahistoricalsociety.com). Friends of the Pacific Electric Trail present the "Cucamonga Challenge" Saturday, May 12'" @ on the Pacific Electric Trail (Register at www.cucamongachallenge.com). 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a. m. A portion of the race will take place through Historic Alta Loma and Etiwanda areas. Proclamations from the City Council recognizing the Sam and Alfreda Wednesday, May 161" Maloof Compound as one of "America's Hidden Gems" for National @ 7:00 p.m. Historic Preservation Month will be presented during the regular meeting of the City Council in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Saturday, May 181" @ Annual Local History Night at the Paul A. Biane Library "Discovering our 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. local Gems." Saturday May 19'", @ Community Hike at the Etiwanda Preserve (Contact Angelica Banuelos at 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. 909-477-2760, ext. 2118 or at Angelica.Banuelos @cityofrc.us for more information). • ITEM A HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION STAFF REPORT National Historic Preservation Month May 2012 April 11, 2012 Page 2 • On May 12, 2012, Friends of the Pacific Electric Trail in conjunction with the City's Community Service Department will be hosting a "Cucamonga Challenge" walk, run, and bicycle event to celebrate the National Physical Fitness Month. Planning staff will install information boards along the Historic Pacific Electric Trail for people and event participants to read while doing the "Cucamonga Challenge." Additionally, signs will be posted informing patrons of National Historic Preservation Month. On May 18, 2012, the Local History Night will be an evening event hosted by the Planning Department and Library staff. We will be highlighting Rancho Cucamonga's "Hidden Gems" such as the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound. On this night accounts will reveal how the woodworker, Sam Maloof, was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius" grant; and, how he was described by the Smithsonian Institution as "America's most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman." There will be a photo presentation showing how Maloof's quality sculptured furniture enrich our community's culture and brought world wide recognition to the City of Rancho Cucamonga. Other activities during Local History Night will include live music and activities for both children and adults. The City plans to advertise and promote National Historic Preservation Month in a variety of ways • Channe13 • City Manager's Weekly • Email broadcast • Flyers • • Large format flyer displayed in the rotunda area during the month of May RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Historic Preservation Commission receive the staff report and file for future reference.
