The Base Line Road Parkway Improvement Project is nearing completion. Directed at improving pedes- trian circulation and aesthetics on the north side of the street along the future Central Park frontage, the beautification project will provide residents with a walking path, trees, boulders and mulch. The project was approved with the 1996/97 Budget and is funded through Beautification fees. The project posed unique landscape design chal- lenges. Due to years of herbicide applications the parkway was unsuitable for planting. Adding visu- al interest to the street and setting the walkway back from the street were primary goals. The Australian Willow tree was selected for this site because of its full appearance and hardiness. The walking path will be enhanced by railroad ties to provide the rural imagery of a fence. This project shows true community spirit as it will be completed with the assistance of volunteers, who will be installing the railroad ties, mulch and cobbles. The City of Rancho Cucamonga salutes the contributions of these volunteers, whose efforts will be enjoyed by all residents and help enhance the beauty of our city. The new unit has generated a lot of interest from other agencies involved in technical rescue because it pro- vides a comprehensive response to fire and rescue emergencies. The truck has several features that are not found on any of the other units in the Fire District's fleet. Lighting for night rescues and the air supply for breathing air have been built into the unit. Additionally, the truck and trailer carry a full complement of ground ladders, ventilation equipment, air bags, ropes, jack hammers, generators, compressors and boring equipment. The unit will be used to perform atito- mobile extrications, salvage operations, confined space res- WS cues, trench rescues, structural rescues (collapsed build- ings), swift water rescues and canyon rescues. The new unit is the only one of its kind in the west end of San Bernardino County that will be staffed 24-hours a day. This staffing level ensures that all regions within the City can rely on a quick response time for rescue emergencies. .. p+ ,-e o p J`o ese ' 'r o,. ee. G a r C'` .OV e You are inited to attend a Toy Drive November 29th - December 24th Bring a new unwrapped toy or piece of sporting equipment to any Rancho Cucamonga Fire Station or to Rancho Cucamonga City Hall. The most significant accomplishment for the new program has been its demonstrated ability to cut paramedic response times to Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls from an average of ten minutes to under five min- utes. This shorter response time means that on average a paramedic can begin appropriate treatment on a patient much quicker than in the past, a factor which has a significant effect on the treatment and recovery of cardiac patients. STATISTICS JULY 1996 THROUGH MAY 1997 Total Number of Patients Treated: 4,187 -= 55.6% of the calls received by the Fire District were for Emergency Medical Service (EMS). ----► 62.3% of the EMS calls received required some form of Advanced Life Support (ALS) which can only be provided by a trained paramedic. ---; 37.7% of the calls required Basic Life Support (BLS) services, which do not require a paramedic.
