HomeMy WebLinkAboutReporter Spring 2010 . ..: 1 1 IThe City of Rancho Cucamonga is one of 41 cities nationwide to win a grant under an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation designed to fight childhood obesity. More than 500 communities nationwide competed for the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities funding and Rancho Cucamonga was awarded $360,000 for a program to improve access to physical activiry and affordable healthy foods for children and families throughout the City. The program, called Healthy RC Kids, focuses on changing community systems so that making a healthy choice becomes an easy choice. Under the program, the major youth-serving institutions in the communiry will work to develop common and complementary policies that will improve opportunities for active living and healthy eating for children and families. Healthy RC Kids has the backing of parmers that include the San Bernazdino County Healthy Communities Program, San Antonio Community Hospital, Inland Empire United Way, Rancho Cucamonga Family YMCA, Northtown Housing Development Corporation and the Cucamonga, Central, Etiwanda, and Chaffey school districts. On the fitness front, the Healthy RC Kids Partnership is committed to increasing walking and bicycling opportunities for youth across the communiry, including forging joint use agreements to make school facilities available outside of school hours. Program . specifics include ` E^'" constructingabike " ' - ;-,.: trail as a part of S "'' the Safe Routes to School program and extending a portion of the Pacific Electric Trail within the Ciry. Healthy eating will be supported by pushing to increase healthy food options in schools and child care settings, and exploring opportunities for community gardens and farmers' markets. Leaders aim to attract fresh food outlets and modify zoning regulations to allow "edible front yards." "We have a vision for Rancho Cucamonga as a communiry where children encounter healthy messages and healthy choices that are easy to access as they go about their daily activities," said James Troyer, Planning Director for the Ciry and Project Director for the Healthy RC Kids Partnership. "While our target is the entire community, we are placing special emphasis on the southwest area of our communiry with the highest risk population and fewest resources." Rancho Cucamongas health indicators mirror that of San Bernardino counry, the fourth most obese county in the U.S., where three out of four school children do not meet fitness standards. Every 10 years, the U.S. government undertakes a census to count residents LTnited States nationwide. Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the count includes everyone—citizens and non- citizens. Why Should I Care? While the census helps determine the nation's future, most people don't know that it also affects local issues. The most obvious effect is the outcome of population levels on government representation. Census counts are used to determine how many representatives will go to Congress from each state and region within the country. A full count is especially important for regions that have had rapid growth over the past 10 years, such as Rancho (' .' Cucamonga. :, In addition, every year more than $400 billion dollars are allocated to state, local, and tribal jurisdictions based on census data. Over 10 years, the total is a huge $4 trillion. While most of the money comes to cities like Rancho Cucamonga in the form of grants, the programs they fund can be very important, including public safery. Finally, the data about population, age, income, education, and ethniciry help shape decisions policy makers will formulate from now unti12020. Public health, neighborhood improvements, transportation, education, senior services and much more are all at stake. What Do I Have to Do? Answer 10 questions in 10 minutes. The 2010 Census has one of the shortest questionnaires in the history of the census. The 2010 Census asks for your name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, whether you own or rent your home. If you do not feel comfortable with an English questionnaire, questionnaires in Spanish, Chinese (simplified), Korean, Vietnamese, and Russian, as well as language guides in 59 other languages are available. Large print questionnaires will be available for the visually impaired and a TTD program will assist the hearing impaired. When Will I Get My Questionnaire? The questionnaires will be sent out by mail in March 2010. Fill out and mail back your questionnaire as soon as you get it. Households that do not respond will receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Census takers will visit households that do not respond to take a count in person.
