SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TRI-COM~IINITIE S HERITAGE AND ~
SUPPORTING ~HE PERMANENT INOORPORATION OF THE HISTORIC
LEGACIES OF THE COM~I~NITIES OF ALTA LOMA, OJCA~DNGA, AND
ETIWANDA
WHEREAS. the City"of Rancho ~Cuca~onga. which ~ :apidly developin$~.a
unique high quality cltY~',/~nase. Was created from the ~hree',co~nunitiee.~of"A~ta
Loma, Cuca~onga. and Etiwanda;' and '~ .~ ~ .~::
~HERF~, the City of Rancho Cuca~onga: 6eneral Plan acknowledges the
/~nportance of the ~hree co.unities-in its statemen~that the City should be
designed' ~o establish the identity of the C~ty as a single entity ~h/le also
preserving the individual character of the-three existing con~unities~; and,
~U/EREAS. the City o[ Rancho Cuca~onga recogn/zes that each of these
co~unities has its o~n 'history and rich cultura~ heritage that have
contributed to the unique high qttality /mags which is attracting national
recognition; and
~HERF~, the legacy of these co.unities provide the City of Rancho
Cucamonga ~ith a rich sense oi history and an /~nportant legacy for its future
~htch w[11 be recognized forever~ and,
~IEREA~. the most noteworthy attributes of each co.unity may be
identified as follows:
ALTA LOMA: This community originatet:from two separate
agricultural colonies (Iowa and Hermosa Tracts). After
railroad service was established, an election was held to
select the current name by a one vote margin. The area
has been known for its fertile soil, pleasant climate,
beautiful setting adjacent, to an~ ..below Cucamonga Peak,
and distinct rural atmosphere.
O3CAMDNGA: This community carries the original name
derived from the Spanish land grant and identified as the
Rancho de Cucamonga. The original Rancho was established
almost 150 years ago on March 3, 1839 and contained not
only the three communities comprising the City today, but
also parts of Upland and Ontario. Cucamonga has been the
crossroads of this region from the days of the Indians
through today acting as a convenient resting place between
the desert and Los Angeles on a route for the military.

ETI~ANDA: The community was founded by the Chaifey
Brothers as an agricultural subdivision which included for
the first time ~he allocation of water right shares on an
acreage ounership basis, thereby_ es.~abl ishing the
foui/~ti~i for a successful ''grape'' and- vine producing
indds~ry.--'Other fif~Cs for ~h.l~ area included
insi~-lattOn of the 'first electrical lights west of the
Rockl/"2~ountains and the ~irs~ long distance phone call in
the world.
