HomeMy WebLinkAbout86-364 - Resolutions RESOLUTION NO. 86-364 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO CUCANONGA, CALIFORNIA, DECLARII~G ITS OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF AI~ 800 BED JAIL LOCATED NEXT TO I~E SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY LAW AND JUSTICE CENTER AND ADJACENT TO THE RANCHO CUCAMONGA CIVIC CENTER/DOWNTOWN AREA WHEREAS, the County of San Bernardinn proposes to construct an 800 bed jail facility next to the County Law and Justice Center, adjacent to the Raucho Cucamouga Civic Center site in the heart of the City's downtorn area at Foothill Boulevard and Haven Avenue; and MHEREAS, the Rancho Cucamongs City Council wishes to express its overvhelming concern that the construction of a jail facility wilI be a detriment to the quality environment which presently exists in that dovntovn area; and ~/HEREAS, while a jail facility site was proposed for Rancho Cucamouga and approved by the County Board of Supervisors in 1981, the development pattern in the Raucho Cucsmonga Civic Center area has changed signifxcantly ' since that time and is no longer an appropriate location for a jail facility; and ~/HEREAS, the City of hncho Cucamonga has made a major effort to establish a high quality downtorn identity with an emphasis on civxc, cultural, office professional and commercial uses, which is not the type of development which invites the construction of s jail facility; and $ ~/HEREAS, on November 4, 1986, the citizens of aancho Cucamonga voted overvhelminSly three-to-one in an advisory measure to oppose the construction of a jail facility at the Civic Center site, a vote which should be considered in the decision to relocate the jail site; and WHEREAS, the Rancho Cucsmonga City Council wishes to work cooperatively with the County Board of Supervisors to find an alternative location for a jail facility. NO~/, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Raacho Cucsmonga City Council does hereby declare its strong opposition to the construction of a Jail Facility st the County Lay and Justice Center site located in the heart of the downtorn Civic Center area.
